I believe that must have been it. It was the original computer game version, anyway. Okay, so the graphics weren't jaw-dropping. So what? It didn't need it. Besides, it was released in, what, 1990? Hello? Why're you complaining? (I'm tempted to say "Kids these days" but you might be older than I am. )
As for the other version, it's somehow not connected with the people who made Civilization I, II, and III. I don't know how that's possible, since it's obviously a Civ game. But I think that one was the best of what I've tried; I could get into the files and change things without having to learn C++ or whatever it's called. I combined a bunch of changes with recomendations from a user named Celestial Dawn (I couldn't install her hack, so I used some of the changes she mentioned by changing things myself), and added Nordicus' Trade Goods hack (I hated the Civ:CtP trade goods system).
After that time spent (two months of fiddling and play testing, fitted around school), I had the best computer game I'd ever played. |

It's unlikely that you would be able to access the program-code files (especially if they are written in C++ ) without the appropriate software, but if this is the game version I am thinking about, you won't have much difficulty altering the files in the way you wish...
Good gaming...

However, I've always been partial to the original Civilization and my layman's hack of Civilization: Call to Power. I know those aren't fantasy games, but it's still what I come up with. [/quote]
Civilization is one of the best series ever. I wish someone would come up with a way to combine Forgotten Realms and Civilization (I posted something to that effect a long time ago in the Computer Games section).
Several of my favorites have already been mentioned (Xenogears, FF3, Sukoiden 2, etc.). For anybody who loves Zelda, I highly reccomend Alundra, for the original Playstation. Its like Zelda, but with a much better story and insanely difficult puzzles (you WILL reference gamefaqs at least once!). Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Persona 2 are other games I urge everyone to try. Might and Magic:World of Xeen is the best hack n' slash CRPG I've ever played, but I havn't played many (damn Macintosh and its limited selection!). |

I can't believe I Missed this!! Oh well, time for my opinion, many good series are put here but I see one missing. The Great, and Grand Dragon Warrior (Or Dragon Quest depending on where you are in the world) is in my thought, the best fantasy game ever. Twas what started me down the RPG path... and where I learned that You do not go up against a Golden golem (Goldman) with a wooden shield, leather armor and a bamboo pole....
Also worth mention is Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) IV (4) for the greatest character ever: Taloon the Arms Merchant ( One of the many PC/NPC characters you can get). If only I could create a D&D character like him. Such great moves in Battle: Taloon yells=frightens enemy Taloon wiggles finger in circle= Enemy dizzy Taloon sings= Enemy put to sleep Taloon calls for help= Army of Merchants appear out of nowhere and attack enemy Taloon trips= Critical hit Taloon throws sand= Enemy blinded
The unbeatable Taloon... Kinda short, overweight, not really dressed to thrill, but best character ever... The good ol' days of the NES... You young punks now days with yer flashy graphics... When 'I' was a boy we had to imagine the action... our characters only had two sprite modes. Both to simulate walking. Yer all spoilt. They don't make games like they used to... |
It has to be Certain, the Gods Hate Me. For whatever irrevokable Fate, I have been made the walking Joke. Either that, or Beshaba is overlyfond Of Me. -Unknown |

Well, if we are talking for PC all I will say is this: Zork. If you don't get it, you never will.
Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 (Amn and ToB) all go on top of the list. All superbly made games. But greatest game of all?

I'm a huge fan of the Zelda titles, the BG and IWD titles, I loved the Eye of the Beholder games, and the Final Fantasy games (especially 1 and 5 - the stacking levels in 5 were fun). Faxanadu, Wizardry, Shining in the Darkness, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and Hexen were all classics.
I must say that my first real experience with a deep, open-ended role-playing game was with Ultima 6 back when I was in 8th grade. To this day I don't think I was ever more addicted to a game. It was so huge, and the interaction was so amazing. I don't think it's size and scope were ever duplicated.
However, I prefer the old paper and pencil DMing. That's the best game out there. |

Hey, was just browsing the net for a topic like this one and want to throw in my opinion. To this date, my favorite fantasy game, hands down, without close competition, is one game. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES). This is as close to my "dream game" as I have ever played. Though I enjoyed elements of Zelda 1 (NES) more than 3, and 1 was incredibly fun along with being the game that got me permanently hooked on games, and Zelda 2 (NES) was awesome for what is was, Zelda 3 just has the whole package: mystery, atmosphere, adventure, exploration, action, story, a universe of characters and locales, music, and more. It is not my dream game, but it is darn close. The only game that has ever come close to the atmosphere of Zelda 3 that I've played is Dungeon Siege. Though Dungeon Siege suffered from staggered gameplay, repetitiveness, lack of mystery when the game engine begged for it, and a lack of story, the graphics and music created an atmosphere that was surreal.
What I am looking for (I will most likely have to make it myself at the rate of junky games releasing these days) is the next logical step of game design after A Link to the Past. Take the game, and make it better. Give it a more mysterious story, add many more characters that have use in a sprawling, mysterious, and very interactive world. Orchestrated music combined with what I like to call, "ethereal" music (an example would be a female soloist with an emotional voice singing to nature-like sounds [wind, rain, thunder] with a harp, flute, etc [those type of instruments]) is necessary. Great graphics would be important in bringing the world to life. I'd prefer attention to detail than another "random shiny object" you see in lots of newer games. Also, this game would have to be a PC game. No offense to anyone, but consoles are dead. They can't go any further than they already are without becoming a computer itself.
Anyway, enough of my rant, heh, I do have a question. To those of you who love the first 3 Zelda games as much as I do (I honestly dont care for any after the first 3; they are fun the first time through but I never play them again...they're also becomming far too childish), what would you recommend as something comparable on the PC? I havent played D&D or any of the spinoffs, and I hate...read hate, the standard Final Fantasy type RPG (basically don't even suggest a turn-based game). Nice forum you guys have here, I'll be sure to pop in now and then. Thanks! |

First of all, read the name of this topic. I wasn't aware that D&D had a monopoly on the word 'Fantasy'. I very much dislike turn-based games, that is just my perogative. I'm not telling you that you can't like them. I am here to interact with people who are supposed to be talking about the 'Best Fantasy Game Ever.' If this isn't what this topic is truly about and it was named inappropiately and should read 'Best D&D-based game ever' then I'll be glad to leave and never return, but my original post is not at fault because the title of this topic was mis-labeled. |

No, it isn't all about D&D, or else they wouldn't be talking about Zelda. Pay no attention to Ec'Thelion over there.... |
"Very well, I am admittedly not as traditional in my methodology as you are. So what? The end result is all the same: target ceases to exist. If I happen to use a bit more flair, and a little less stealth to go about it, so be it. If drow were truly meant to skulk within the shadows, we'd not have stark white hair, now would we? Long gone are my days of creeping in the shadows and hiding in wait. Those means are for beings of a cowardly bent. We Bladesingers are risen above such dribble. So saying, it is boldly into the fray I shall go; if I should come to meet my maker, I will at least have done so with a sense of pride and dignity that your ilk will never truly understand. Now go back to hiding in your dark recesses, pathetic mewling...."~Vesz'aun Auvryath |

If you had read my topic in its entirety, you would have noticed that I specifically said that I "was just browsing the net for a topic like this one and want to throw in my opinion." That kind of implies that I was using a search engine. I haven't even been to the site, I just came directly to this topic. |

Heh, I'd love to if I had a Playstation, but the newest console I have is the Super Nintendo, lol! I used to own the N64, but I sold it on EBay quite some time ago. I'll keep it in mind if I visit a friend's house with a PS, thx. I'm really looking for PC games though. :) |

Its worth the expense of a used Playstation if you can find a copy of Alundra. There might be an adaptor you can use, but I have an old Macintosh so I generally pay very little attention to whats available for computers. |

If you like Zelda and have a PS2, you should try Dark Chronicle. It's similar to Zelda, well the fishing is anyway. |

Zelda was pretty good in its day, but what I really liked was those old atari/amiga RPGs like Dungeon Master, Drakkhen, Blood Wych and Bards Tale. If we are not talking aincent history i would have to say the that the concept introduced with BG1 blew away the competition when it came. Non computer roleplayinggames that I had my best experiences with is MERP and a swedish rpg called "Drakar och Demoner" (wich was a game with rule influences from RuneQuest) + of course ADD1+2+3, one campaign especially that was based in the 2nd ed "Bloodstone lands" gray campaign box. A module that i loved was "Drow of the Underdark" wich i think kicks several shades of ink out of the new "underdark" book. Those Ghanadaur priests were really mystical and powerful. By the way... why is ghanadaur a major drow diety in 2nd ed and a lesser in 3rd? At the same time I think Lolth was a minor diety in 2nd (DOTU) and a major in 3rd? |
