Sounds good. Only, the lich has to die in the story. My friend has no choice in the matter. So, no retelling on the lich's part.
I think you overlooked the rest of what I wrote. I was imagining a story of stories, similar to the movie Hero (the assassin tells the emperor stories of his exploits so he can get close enough to kill him). The Lich would still be killed at the end of the meta-story...possibly by one of the ways I mentioned.
The Lich could always suffer the fate of Anthilar the Lich, who in 1056 DR was placed within a "Lich Coffin"...a massive suit of inflexible iron armor.
