Ooh, Tasslehoof, good call! Even though kender insist they're not thieves, they fit the bill pretty well. And Tas is a favorite, regardless of what he considers himself to be.

They're handlers, traditionally, and most DRAGONLANCE lore tends to differentiate slightly between that practice and the art of thievery.

Granted, there isn't much difference in the end, but the lengths the kender go to to establish their handling practice as something entirely beneficial to the rest of civilisation... is one of the coolest aspects of the race, in my opinion.

Bah! I caught her 6 or 7 times, when I was just a teenager! How good a thief can she be if a teenager, armed with just a handful of clues, can catch her?

I voted other. I happen to like a rogue elf who, despite his stats, isn't really a theif but his abilities make it seem so.

Ah, David Trampier's illustrations were iconic. There were two thieves prying the gemstone eye from the demon idol.

Bilbo Baggins is one of my beloved fantasy thieves, even though I don't often think of him as such. Without him my favourite books wouldn't exist. :P

My other favourite is Silk, aka Prince Kheldar, of the Belgariad series by David Eddings. One of the snarkiest and most talented in the profession of thieving/spying/assassination/etc, and one of the main reasons the books make me giggle so much. :D

I'm reading the Locke Lamora Sequence now. Great books. Locke is one hell of a confidence man.

The sad thing is that the author has some major anxiety issues and it looks like it will be at least another year before book 3 is released.

Had to go with "Other," because you missed the character who is far and away clearly the best thief in fantasy: Fritz Leiber's Gray Mouser.
Jimmy the Hand is more "boy next door makes good as thief."
Aaron from The Fire's Stone is the most INTERESTING of the newer thieves. Tanya winces when she looks back at that book, but it's one of Ed's faves.

You might want to read the OP. I'm not asking who's the BEST or GREATEST Thief to ever appear in fantasy books. It's FAVORITE. What's best for you may be lame for others.

Locke is my favorite because he isn't your common everyday thief. Sure he can pick someone's pocket, but he specializes in "Ocean's Eleven" type heists.

That's one of the things I like about him, too. Though, for me, he lacks the charm that Jimmy has.

For me Tass is more a 'jester' than a proper thief. His thieving adventures are there to incite good laughs.

It makes me sad that I was the only one who voted for Locke Lamora. If anyone out there is looking for a great renaissance-style fantasy about some epic scheming and thieving, then please treat yourself to these books.

IMO he is a fighter/assassin with thieflike abilities.
To hear Bob tell it, Artemis Entreri is not an assassin but a "fighter/thief who happens to kill people for money."

Which is why he survived the great assassin purge of 1358.

Probably early Conan or Grey Mouser. But if we agree that Cugel the Clever should be defined as a thief he would be a clear winner.

No Canon, more stories, more Realms.

I'm not yet through with Night's Hunting by Matthew Sprange, but from what I read so far, the hero, Lucius, is proving to be a capable and interesting thief. [He's also part-wizard (or, as they are called in Kerberos (the setting's name), "Shadowmage," which is a cross between wizard and assassin.]

[Edit]
Finished reading it. It appears like Lucius is more a wizard than a thief.

I'm pretty stumped as well. The only Locke I can recall from my SNES-days, was a minor character from a Zelda game.

Ah, that explains it. I've been on-and-off with the Final Fantasy franchise for most of it's history [of limited availability] in this country. Thus, I never played VI.

For me it's a toss up between Taurus of Nemedia, and Conan.

And it took me thirty five minutes to figure out what :) means.

I played contra, you didn't need eyes for some of that, but there have been a few that did I've played anyway.

Zelda sure did, but hay we had a blast.
