Hello folks

I have been working in a Arcane Archer concept, and was looking for any background, fluf, information, histories on them. Do you guys know about any lore that would give some meaning to the class other then the obvious?

Also would you point out any Authors that I could consult with regarding this matter?

The amount of info on them is just disheartening.

The only appearances I'm aware of are the 2e Complete Book of Elves and the 3.5 DMG. You might also check Lord Karsus' netbook or peruse through Snowblood's rather large library of tomes.

The only novel character I can think of who's an arcane archer is Khelben's apprentice, the protagonist of Blackstaff (whose name I'm blanking on at the moment). But, to put it mildly, her arcane archery isn't the focus of the book. I think it's got maybe one or two off-hand mentions.

Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be...
Sigh... And now 4e as well.

The official Arcane Archer in the d20 SRD, Pathfinder's Arcane Archer, Arcane Archer from the D&D Online Wiki ... it looks like a popular concept so it's possible that other d20/OGL products added depth to the class, possibly reworking or renaming it.

I recall in a certain "trilogy", Ilsevele Miritar was an arcane archer, though she called herself a "spell archer" once or twice, if I remember correctly.

Many mentions are made of them in Snowblood's collection. Usually a note of this or that particularly famous or skilled individual, though many more instances of certain schools or circles of mages dedicated to the art.

Aren't many of his collections just created by himself, mixed with canon? Whenever I go and start looking over actual history for the Realms, I want founded fact more often than not.

In the absence of canonical doctrine you must invent your own, follow the heretics, or choose to remain unenlightened.

[Edit]

Incidentally - Snowblood's works can be found here, and Lord Karsus's here.
I can't abide elven fluffery myself, but these are considered first rate sourcebooks by many fans.

I prefer to go with working with my group and constructing an overall better story, letting each player contribute and build from there when canon is missing.

This post has some interesting locales and groups that could train arcane archers.

Several churches and ranger groups to Solonor and Shevarash mainly.

Actually, Fellfire, there aren't Arcane Archers in the Complete Book of Elves. The book has some mentions of enspelled arrows, and special arrowheads that would allow wizard and priest spells to empower those missiles. The only class I recall that combines arcane spells and archery in 2e is the half-elf "Spellarcher" kit found in Dragon Magazine #222. Besides, Demihuman Deities has some priest spells useful for archers, specially in Solonor Thelandira's entry, as mentioned by Bladewind.
