I apologize in advance if I missed an easy answer to this question but, I'm having trouble finding a list of FR novels that have been placed into a rough semblance of chronological order based upon when they take place.
Obviously no list will be perfect with the various date systems but, having something like this would help me in the campaign I'm building. It would make the world richer by having the canon events of the whole world happening in the background as the campaign progresses.
Does anyone know if such a list exists and if so, where I could find a copy of it? Otherwise, it might be a good project for us to attempt.

I myself started making a list sometime in the not so distant past. But I got bored eventually, specially that there are novels I couldn't care for.
If you're interested, there's a listing in o-love's site. But it's not exactly what you're looking for. The order is by author, title, and date of publication. |

Thanks! You're right that it's not exactly what I'm looking for but it's a starting place at any rate.
A perfect example would be something akin to [Book Title] takes place from DR 1234 through DR 5678.
Not that I'm trying to compile the entire history of the realms but it would be a handy resource to know roughly what time period each novel represented in the passage of time so that as I build my campaign, I can use time-appropriate NPCs and events for the "campaign year".

I'm not sure when was the last time the site owner updated it, but Paul S. Kemp's Godborn is not due until November next year. So you can eliminate that from the 2011 list, as well as its sequel, which will most likely be released in 2013. |

I'm sure this was posted (probably by its creator) somewhere on here, but I can't remember exactly where. I imagine that has to be how it found its way into my bookmarks. It goes to a point, but looks to be something along the lines of what you're looking for.

| I just recently compiled just that list on the Forgotten Realms wiki. Not everything has been categorized by date yet (the Unknown section is still rather large), but I think the list has at least 80% of the books dated so far. Here is the link. If anyone can date any of the novels in the Unknown section, we'd sure appreciate it. |

Although it hasn't been updated to include recent books, the Wizards website has a quite extensive list of all the Realms novels and short stories, dated.
Ed's introductions to his tales in THE BEST OF THE REALMS Book II: The Stories of Ed Greenwood precisely date all of his stories therein.
BEAST has refined the dates of most of Bob's Realms fiction.
And during the time period 2008 through 2011, ALL new Realms novels were supposed to have dating somewhere on the first page of text (or the "front matter" before that)...though I've noticed, from the questions I receive to pass on to Ed, that LOTS of readers seem to miss these quite clear datings. :}
And THE GRAND HISTORY OF THE REALMS included datings, too.

Indeed it would. And I have noticed that certain authors are better at including dates than others 
I was merely hoping the same idea had occurred to someone else and they beat me to it. I'd love to see a scroll with something akin to Tethtoril's Bookshelf and the approximate or exact dates each of those tomes of lore encompass.

I date my stuff as much as possible (at least without spoiling it!).
My one exception is my novel, Depths of Madness, which is purposefully not dated within the book to foster that bleary sense of time passing untracked. It gets a date in the Grand History of the Realms, however, as having transpired in Nightal 1374 and finishing on 1 Hammer 1375.
As I understand it from my editor, dating within the first few chapters is a standard practice in WotC novels these days.

| I was wondering whether that was an author thing or strictly editorial addition in books. I know I particularly enjoy the exact date at the start of each chapter (year is nice, but specific day is better) because when it's not there I'm prone to reading entire pages twice after not paying attention because I was thinking about time elapses. (ok I've only done that a handful of times, but I have done it). |

From time to time in the history of the published Realms, clear dating has been an editorial requirement, but usually the editor asks the writer to "fix" (include) it, in a draft, rather than writing it in themselves. An editor might add it as a chapter heading line, but for in-prose mentions (although a copy editor might add it), it's more often been TSR/WotC practice, according to Ed and quite a few other writers and editors I've spoken with down the years, to get the writer to do the dating. It leads to smoother-flowing prose and less clumsiness.
In my own editorial experience with fiction, outside the gaming field, editors point out dating and timing-with-the-tale omissions or possible errors to the writer, discussion ensues, the way the writer should address such things is agreed upon, and the writer does it.
