I'm inclined to purchase this new game anyway, given my proclivities for all-things-Tolkien, but I'm curious about any thoughts/opinions/reviews our resident scribes may have on the game?

I seem to recall something about Brian Cortijo receiving a copy at GenCon as a gift... Not sure if I'm remembering that properly, though.

Thoughts?

I did, indeed, receive The One Ring (the new Tolkien RPG) from Erik Scott de Bie this GenCon, as a gift for my recent nuptials.

I've been busy catching up on rest, writing, and emails since the convention, but from what I've seen and been told about the game thus far, it's just a little bit of awesome.

So, yeah; that's my report so far.

Film at 11?

I haven't had a chance to play it either, but as Brian said, it looks awesome. I hope to put a game together with some of the WotC folks. Kinda thinking an elven archer would be really awesome . . . we'll see.

Cheers

lets see what to do first.

this or the nevrewinter book......

the neverwitner book...

why is being a wizard like being a drow? both are likely to find a dagger in the back from a rival or one looking to further his own goals, fame and power

I played in a game of it at Gen Con. I really liked the system. It seemed fairly easy to learn and I had fun playing it. It's pretty straightforward, you always roll the d12 feat die, and a number of d6 success dice equal to your rating in the skill. Eye of Sauron is at best counted as a 0. Gandalf run is autosuccess whether or not you otherwise would have beaten the target number. One or more sixes on your success dice mean that what you were doing succeeds really well; if you've missed a target number by a bit you can spend a point of hope to add the relevant attribute to the roll.

I played the elf pregen, to no one's surprise who knows me. He had a greatspear. Combat doesn't use a grid or map, which is nice. You choose a stance for each round that determines how easy it is for you to hit them and them you.

The system seems rather heavily RP-oriented, which is a good thing. I am pleased that out of the 18 skills, Song makes it as one. It got used several times. One of the players even wrote a short snippet of song to sing IRL during a negotiation, heh.

It seems like a fun little system to use. The books themselves are nice and pretty, and coming with the dice for the system is definitely welcome. Also nice that the dice are designed such that you can use normal d12s and d6s for the game(The game calls out such and tells you how) - Eye of Sauron is the 11 side, Gandalf rune is the 12 side, 1-10 are as normal, and d6s tend to have a 6 side. :P

Looks interesting, I'm a huge Tolkien fan and will take a look at it if I can. Unfortunately I don't have the funds and space for another RPG.

That's sweet. It wouldn't be a Middle-Earth game if it didn't include songs.

Neat.

I appreciate the update folks. I'll look toward making this purchase over the weekend.

Oddly, I've never been interesting in doing an RPG set in Middle-Earth... But the only MMO I play is Lord of the Rings Online! I've even been fiddling with turning my various LotRO toons into FR NPCs. I've got to tweak the name of my level 65 dwarf Runekeeper to make it more Realmish, but other than that, I love the idea (and that toon is so much fun to play! ).

Interestingly, I haven't bothered much with any LotR RPGs, because I've never found any that I believe, at least, faithfully translate the atmosphere of the books to the table-top.

Most everything I'm hearing about the One Ring game, though, suggests that my long quest for such a game, may indeed be at an end.

Until then, it's back to the only table-top gaming with LotR that I enjoy... and that's GW's Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game.
