Actually, I was quite lucky -- the fire I suffered was at a storage place, and not my house. I'm quite grateful about that. |

Unfortunatly your troubles are well-known to me. I went through the same thing about 15 years ago. I hope you have renter's insurance, a rider on your policy to cover your gaming materials, and a complete list of your collection, preferably with photos to show condition and value.
BTW - this advice is good for everyone on these boards who has an extensive gaming collection. While I got no where near full replacement cost for my collection, the check I got from my insurnance company covered replacing about 60% of what I lost. The really hard part was finding copies of stuff like To the Aid of Falx. |

Since my fire, I've gotten into the habit of taking pictures of everything, and having the pics and lists of everything on a thumbdrive in my pocket.
I got a fair amount of insurance money, too, but I don't think I'll ever find a copy of the first printing of the DDG in as good a shape as the one I had -- at least not for anything approaching a reasonable price.
I actually got lucky on replacing a lot of my stuff; I've got more TSR/WotC material from 2E than I did before the fire (namely, all of the Planescape stuff).
But yeah, lists and pictures of everything. Can't agree more with that one. |

I have no intentions of hunting down every single item I owned; I had a bunch of Darksun and Planescape items still shrink-wrapped.
I am trying to think positive and look at it as 'a new beginning': Therefor, I will be probably be jumping onto the Golarion/Pathfinder bandwagon. I have stated several times here that "I am too old and am too heavily invested to start-over with another setting" - I suppose god has solved that dilemma for me.
I still love FR, but I have nothing left, and since no new products are forthcoming, the logical decision is to move forward with currently available material. Even my computer turned to slag, so not only did I lose hundreds of pdf's, but I also lost ALL of my maps and photoshop files (including texture and icon sets I've been working on for over three years). Not to mention pages and pages of hand-written notes...
Way too much to rebuild... time to move on. If I do make it to Gencon (which I sincerely doubt), I may pick-up a couple of 'old favorites' (the Gray Box would be nice) if I see them, but that's about it. Like I said above, I hope everyone attending has a great time. |

I didn't replace everything, either, though I did replace a lot. Most of the TSR material I got a really great deal on (we're talking like $4 for boxed sets), so replacing the FR stuff and getting Planescape on top of that worked out well. I had all of the 1E and 2E hardcovers, though, and most of those I won't replace. I also decided not to bother with most of the Werewolf: The Apocalypse stuff I used to have, though I did re-acquire the Glass Walkers tribebook.
Before putting my stuff in storage, I carried it all down the stairs from my cluttered one-bedroom apartment on the third floor. That made me realize I needed to not be so much of a packrat, and I got rid of what I could right then. I ran out of time to sort thru stuff, though, and put it all in storage intending to work my way thru it all... Then came that dark and stormy night, and I had nothing to sort thru.
So it was the same thing for me: a clean start. I did make a point of reacquiring a lot of lost stuff and getting some other old material on top of that, but I've put a lot of energy into not being the packrat I was. I'm not perfect, in that regard, but I am orders of magnitude better.
I also used some of the insurance money to invest in an external HD, which I do not keep at home. I'd recommend the same for anyone with a lot of data they don't want to lose.
As for GenCon... The last time I planned on attending, I wound up unemployed for a while. Last year, I was still a contractor and was sweating about getting hired on as an employee, so that wasn't an option. This year, I'll be playing with my son when GenCon comes around -- that's a little more important to me.
So maybe next year... |

@Markustay, so sorry to hear about the fire, and I hope things get better soon. We'll meet at another Gen Con, to be sure.
I'll be there this year, after missing last year due to new parenthood. I'm working for the great folks at GAMING PAPER, so anyone looking for me can find me at their booth or in Ed's vicinity.
I also hope to be pushing my small publishing house (Vistag Media) and our first fiction release, but we'll see how the funding drive goes (see the sig).

No worries - I am over the grief for the most part (I lost two dogs as well). The animals were a far greater loss then all my gaming stuff.
Funny thing is, I was stuck in a rut with a fixed income (I can no longer run a construction company like I used to), and was fixating on the past (not just FR) because I couldn't invest in anything new, but I am no longer in that situation. In fact, it also solved my boredom issues - I am now going to build the largest, most involved and detailed home I've ever attempted.... for myself.
I'm not quite as bad-off as Halidan (yet), but I am making the whole thing 100% handicap-accessible. The mapping skills I have been developing the past few years has increased my designing abilities exponentially... maybe I'll become an architect (just call me George Castanza).
I think the Rolling Stones said it best - "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find You get what you need". At least this put a final end to my Grognardize.
Sorry for cluttering up this thread guys, but I figured I should at least let everyone know why I am on hiatus (possibly permanently), and I find myself incapable of participating in any other threads (I have been disarmed!)
Anyway, to get this back on-track, there is still an outside chance I will make it to Gencon this year - lets see if I can get a house up quicker then I can do a map. |

@MT: I am so sorry to hear about your dogs. That's a real tragedy!
And if you do make it to GenCon this year (or any year), do look me up. We'll have some drinks and talk old school and/or new FR to your heart's content.
Cheers |

Updated the statistics after the Events went live Sunday. Overall, here's the changes:
26 4E games added (1 official added, 45 non-WotC in total) 6 Pathfinder games added (all non-Paizo) 3E and 3.5 both added one game AD&D/Basic/House Mods added a whopping 94 games (bringing their total to 177) since my post the week before. LOTS of love for the old school grognards. |
I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

| I figured this was the best place to ask. Does anyone know if there will be a FR seminar this year? I bought my tickets the other day and I got to looking through the events and I did not see one. I saw one for upcoming D&D products and I am hoping the various seminars haven't all been rolled into that one. So, if anyone knows, I would be appreciative for their insight. |

Looking through the list of events for 2011 at gencon, there doesn't seem to be one listed for FR. Spin a Yarn is on there, of course, but there's no FR seminar listed. The only one I've saw is:
SEM1127775, Wizards of the Coast LLC,Dungeons & Dragons Product Preview, "Get an exclusive look at upcoming titles for the D&D RPG, novels, and board games direct from the game designers, developers, and editors. This seminar will take a look at D&D's upcoming releases and tease new mechanics and story directions."
However, it does make sense to me to not have a FR seminar any more because really, there's only one or two new sourcebooks coming out for FR, like the Neverwinter one, while the rest are novels.
That said, there does look to be a lot of Living FR games, as well as a few events based around Neverwinter and the new Neverwinter computer game.

That's more or less all they talked about last year though. This year they have a video game (well, 2, but I don't see them saying a whole lot about Daggerdale unless they plan on expanding it), the Neverwinter book is actually coming out this year and no longer just cover art and a lot of nice ideas. Sure, there's no new miniatures (that I know of) to promote. But, in their place, we have a Drizzt board game. I think if they had enough to put one together last year then they have enough this year, in my opinion.
I kind of hoped if someone like Erik or THO had an insight they would share it and I didn't want to clutter the other parts of the forum when this was already floating around.

Aye,
Well maybe Erik or THO know about one. And I didn't make it to last years, so not sure what happened. Also, I edited my above post while you were replying. :)

I have no ideas or insights about WotC's offerings, seeing as I don't work at WotC. I am flattered by the suggestion though, and wish I could help more.

I did follow-up on the lack of Realms seminar, and it was revealed that information about upcoming Realms products will be unveiled at the over-all D&D Products seminar.
Is there going to be a Candlekeep gathering this year? I know that happens sometimes.

I was afraid of that. My primary interest is the Realms so I didn't sign up for that thinking (more like hoping) there was still a Realms seminar. Oh well. Thanks for looking into it though Erik.

In the years I went, and when I got got forced to organize them, it was mostly just a meet and greet. We also took a group picture or two, and then we all went our separate ways or hung out together at the realms seminar, which would be the d&d one now. :) |

| I always thought it would be cool if CK did a Realms seminar. It would be a cool place to discuss lore, content, and other Realms-specific topics. You could even do a theme each year. Maybe we can pre-plan on for 2012? |

I also think we can manage an impromptu, informal one for this year. How does right after spin a yarn sound?

Location TBD. We might have an actual room, or we might just gather in a group and go look for somewhere to crash.
If this pans out and people are interested, we'll see about doing an actual formal Candlekeep Seminar next year.

I'm sure, if we nagged the right people, and had a strong enough showing at the Candlekeep gathering, we might be able to convince WotC to get a space for us for next year. Heck, we might even be able to organize an officially-unofficial annual Candlekeep seminar.
Just a thought... |
