Tomorrow eve, the PCs in my campaign will be venturing "skyward" from when Phlan is trapped in the Astral Sea to the floating corpse of Moander. They need to track down the Balor Gothmenes and the ex-red wizard Marcus and recover the talisman of bane from them. Once it passes through the pool of darkness beneath Valjevo Castle Phlan should snap back into place on the Moonsea and all will be as it was.

But, I wanted to throw out ideas for adventuring on a god's corpse. This is 1350, so I don't think Finder's completely killed him yet, so there should be some sentience in the corpse.

In addition, one of the PCs is traveling with the "eye of moander" in his possession. Its a rough hewn crystal with a glowing eye within (and a little mouth in th pupil of the eye). My thought is that he and anyone within 20-feet or so will be protected from enviromental activity on the corpse, but others could randomnly have pits open beneath them, or suffer other threats, in addition to what's they will face trying to get to Gothmenes.

So, what would you throw out there to be part of this corpse?

Lots of slimes...jellies, oozes...and half-rotted undead; along with Ghosts even of those that Moander had devoured in life!

Obviously, shambling mounds. :)

Also, I found ... "plague spewers" from MM3 for the victims of the hamatula raids on Phlan. The hamatulas have been staging terror attacks throughout the city, maiming many, killing a few, and always kidnapping one person.

Then otyugh life leeches, mainly because the group has greatly benefited from the cleric's selective healing bursts (selective channel energy) and it'll be nice to see them not be able to take that for granted.

And, the ground will give way in various places dropping people down into corruptures (MMIV).

I need somethings that will fly about and keep them out of the air.

Netheril-Empire of Magic (Free Wizard download: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/2/fr_downloads/tsr1147.zip)
listed some of Moanders servant creatures:
'a varity of plant creatures'
Algoids
Dark Trees
Gibbering Mouthers
shambling mounds
vegepygmies spawned from russet mold
sometimes sent black and green dragons to serve the mouth of moander (head of church) as steeds
all manner of creatures infected by the 'seed of moander' and so turned into puppets of the dark god
particulary enjoyed to corrupt beholders, transforming those that resisted into rotting death tyrants

So, yeah, I had stats for seeds of moander (in fact a PC has some in a pouch somewhere, not knowing what they do). However, I had planned that game in a car in a notebook and have yet to refind the notes. I know I read about the seeds of moander somewhere, but now I have no idea where.

Although not about the seeds of moander there are some references to his corrupting influence in Power of Faerun pg.117
There is also the mention of deepspawns, the universal monster-factory. so if you need a flock of moander controlled harpies or other flying creatures, the deepspawn might do the trick.

Maybe you can come up with something like 'corruption flies'; you may be able to use the stats from those Kyuss Worms (which I think might be in the Age of Worms Adventure path, which had an FR conversion (Overload) over at the Paizo site).

By the sounds of it, you are using 3.5?

There's a number of templates you can add to creatures that give them the ability of flight. This makes it easy to use all these Moander-themed ground critters ... with a little aerial punch to them.

Rhewtani, I've been going through some old threads searching for lore about Moander and Tsornyl/Darkwatch. I noticed that you too had an interest in this subject at one point. Alysstra was kind enough to turn me on to some great Ed-lore about House Tsornyl. Did you ever get your questions regarding Darkwatch answered? There are about 120 pages of posts for Ed in 09' and I'm not having much luck. Would you be willing to share what you've got if it is in that type of format? I'm interested in all of it.

Ed put it out there in the 2011 thread, which I'm guessing is what Alysstra turned you on to, though. Essentially, the Tsornyl Elves "inside" the bubble portaled out and discovered there were more or less vampires without the typical vampire flavor.

Thanks. I don't know if it is too late, but I had a thought. You are dealing with a god of Corruption here. Why not have a few Fallen Angels or Celestials, whatever? Beings of purity that were brought down by Moander's influence. I remember something similar in the Age of Worms Path. A Sword Archon that served Kyuss as an Angel of Putrefaction or something. I'm not sure which ed. you're playing, but for 3.5 it ought to be fairly easy to make a "Corrupted" Template that could be applied to any creature, for flavor or just to pump them up. Angels choked with twisted vines, dripping slime, covered in mold, exhaling fetid spores...

edit: In fact, Markus' suggestion of "Corruption Flies" is meshing quite nicely with what I am thinking. I'm seeing many similarities between Kyuss and Moander.

Or why not a Mold Dragon? I seem to recall a Dread or Corpse Linnorm from somewhere, that might give some ideas. Or a "Corrupted" Green.

edit: The Greenbound Template from LeoF may be a good place to start.

Nobody knows where to find the "Seeds of Moander?"

edit: Found it. They are created by a spell listed in Netheril: Empire of Magic in the link provided by Lirdolin.

I ran the first half of this session last Wednesday. The party found the area "20 feet or so" above the ground to be infested with blood sucking insects. In addition, they quickly discovered that they would need to stay within at least 20 feet from the character carrying the "eye of moander."

Straying away from him led to the ground giving way and either dropping into a deep cavern or releasing a "pile of rotting flesh and ichor."

They took some damage, but all survived so far. They're following an "arcane rope" which only two creatures, so far, can see ... Vassel, with arcane sight cast, and Srossar the Bronze Dragon with mithral scales. They ran into a snag, however, in that up until this point the arcane ropes have more or less led them straight to the artifacts they've been seeking. This time, however, the arcane ropes are wrapped in knots around the corpse of Moander.

As such, they've had to build a new plan to find Gothmenes and retrieve the Talisman of Bane. It's been decided that the talisman is most likely being kept in the brain or the heart, and either location is only going to be reachable by entering the creature's mouth.

En route they were attacked by Thorne the Red Dragon that they forced to flee from Nanther Keep in Melvaunt (In 2E they said House Nanther was on the rise and so I'm linking that progress to them keeping most of Thorne's hoard). This is where we stopped.

I really only had as far as them touching ground on Moander planned out, so this worked well for me.

I've come to the conclusion that as a result of the Tsornyl elves actions, the corpse of moander's mouth is, in fact, sealed, by a magical gag of mithral. However, he has more mouths than that, as the viable entrance to the corpse will be through either of his palms.

I anticipate some confusion, as I've given them the "eye" of moander, so they might look for other entrances in the head. I'll likely have to describe his entire head as covered. I might be able to convey this by using that idea of a corrupted solar, or some being. He could spray acid from jawed mouths in his palms.

I'm pondering throwing in an appearance of Mogion, as well.

I think it's great Rhewtani. I love reading about others games. A couple questions...

Here you said...

I've come to the conclusion that as a result of the Tsornyl elves actions, the corpse of moander's mouth is, in fact, sealed, by a magical gag of mithral. However, he has more mouths than that, as the viable entrance to the corpse will be through either of his palms.

Which actions by Tsornyl do you mean? Also I love the idea of traveling through the innards of the dead god. What do you plan on putting in there? I imagine some nasty creepy-crawlies.

Also...

I anticipate some confusion, as I've given them the "eye" of moander, so they might look for other entrances in the head. I'll likely have to describe his entire head as covered. I might be able to convey this by using that idea of a corrupted solar, or some being. He could spray acid from jawed mouths in his palms.

I really dig this idea with the corrupted Solar. I, for one, look forward to hearing more.

I just discovered the Fungus Gargoyle in Tome of Horrors III. Abilities include a Breath Weapon: a line of deadly spores that sap a characters STR, and a Sickening Aura. Feel free to contact me if you'd like more information. It flies and smells rotten.

Fellfire — There's a little discussion (and a lot of rampant speculation) about Moander in the latter half of this recent scroll. Many of the canon sources involving Moander are listed therein; the novels in particular provide rich descriptions and background fluff about him and his seeds (or whatever rotting stuff he was using).

Rotting celestials are an awesome idea! Not necessarily fallen into truly fiendish ways, yet still corrupted, defiled, decaying, disintegrating. Especially those who haven't yet fully "rotted" ... they might be tormented and brooding, grimly seeking to cure or redeem themselves of this irreversible affliction, torn between their essential celestial pureness and the Darkbringer's filthy contagion.
A poisoned angel with faltering faith just seems like a superbly novel character concept and role-playing opportunity.
