No, sadly I've not read ANY comics in quite some time- it's been over six months since my last ish of Spidey, which is my usualregular reading, along with Sonya, Zorro (can't believe I didn't think of that before- it's a great alt-history type setting even wihout much fantasy in it), and some other Marvel titles. I only occasionally ever picked up any Transformers books. Did get the IDW Pschonauts(I think that's the name of it) for a while- the series with the paranormal investigators/troubleshooters who are all paranormal creatures themselves. (ie, Bigfoot, Chupacabra, a ghost, Moth-Man, ect.)
Oh, BTW- I believe Darkwater is indeed on DVD in its entirety- hubby found it on Amazon not too long ago. And yes, I loved some of the villains on He-Man. (The original one, not the more recent incarnation!) The kicker is that I've actually used some of the She-Ra setting as inspiration for an elven kingdom in my own world- my Whisperwood is based on the Whispering Forest from Etheria, complete with a crystal castle! (Which is also slightly based on the one from Dark Crystal.)
Well, Bebop is okay for a futuristic space-fare, but Brave Starr had more of the fantasy feel to it, with the totem spirits and mystic powers, and the cyber-horse and some of the almost D&D-style aliens. Reminded me of a Spelljammer world.
At least you didn't say "The Ghostbusters" (the one with the big ape)..... That one was kinda dumb.
Hmm, that brings up another question. Am I the only one who has used Fern Gully as inspiration? I loved the fairy magic from that movie. And Hexus seems like a wonderful villain to use in a campaign!
Edit: I remember the name of that comic now- it was Perhapanauts. What struck me as so cool about it was the idea of using paranormal creatures as an MIB-style team to find and deal with other paranormal creatures that threaten the world. The Jersey Devil was one of the really fun BBG's from that series. That, and I LOVED having an intellectual bigfoot and the video-game playing Choopie! |

I was a fan of the early 2000s He-Man reboot. Not the earlier stuff. That being said, most of what He-Man did right were things it got from Conan and various other Howard works. |

Yes they are about the same thickness, simular size to a business card and about the same thickness.
I do use one as a book mark !
To be specific I use an old AD&D 2nd Edition Trading Card : Displacer Beast # 507
I have used it for years... |

A couple of things I would have like to seen, role-playing games based off of Final Fantasy 2 (Snes) and Dragon Warrior 4 on the Nes) I would have bought those in an instant if they were published.
Marvel Roleplaying with the colored columns on the back provided several hours of fun for me and my friends.
West End Star Wars was a very good system, and I wish the license rights were never taken away from them. |

I'll add Brave Starr to that one- for the old west/space cowboy setting. (The mystical aspects would work great in Spelljammer!) And can I add The REAL Ghostbusters to that for all the fun creatures? LOL, Nyxus and Samhain just scream goulishly fun undead creepies to pit players against! Plus, Slimer would make such a fun NPC! (Okay, I've got a habit of throwing random goofy stuff into my games on occasion just for fun, but seriously, who WOULDN'T love to run him as a side-kick or "pet"?)
With that list, you do realise that you need to do something Pre 4ED with The Mysterious Cities of Gold as the inspiration for a Maztican adventure. |

In D&D my favourite is Planescape, then Golarion. Tough almost every other setting has a few parts worth using. I prefer similar to Earth worlds, outside of D&D only Warhammer.
From fantasy novels most interesting worlds are Hyboria (Howard) and Malazan (Erikson).
Followed by Middlearth, Earwa (Bakker), Abercrombie's world, Normannia (Kearney), Bas-Lag (Mieville), Discworld (Pratchett), Westeros (Martin), some of Vance's worlds (The Dying Earth, Lyonesse, Tschai ...), Zothique etc.
More futuristic I like Revelation Space, Hyperion, Culture, Helliconia, Urth, Ryhope, Commonwealth Universe ...
Computer games, Assassin's Creed has an amusing story at the moment, Dragon Age 2 I expected the story to continue from Awakening, was a bit disappointing.

@ Lily: OMG!! I'd totally forgotten that one! Yes, Eldorado and Seven Cities of Gold would make for some great Maztica adventures! Now I'm thinking of old cartoons to loot, lol! Wildfire comes to mind, if only for the colorful talking horse and the witch, although the world iteslf was pretty cool IIRC. And suddenly, some of the old Scooby-Do cartoons are looking good for adventure plots, too.... Hmmm.
Would it be weird to use some of the Voo-doo elements from Disney's N'Owlenas version of The Frog and the Princess? For some reason, I'm wanting to run an adventure on the bayou for that.

What animes have you seen? Sometimes it depends on what it is, whether one might like it. For instance, I absolutely loathe Dragonball anything, and am ambivilant on Inuyasha, but Record of Lodoss Wars was the most amazing fantasy anime I've ever seen- has all the usual D&D stuff- elves, dwarves, dragons, old ruins, priests, magic, ancient relics, and on and on. And the animation has a lot to do with it too. I dislike most of the bubbly, "kiddie" type art of Dragonball and some others, but Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Full Metal Alchemist are some of my favorites, for their more "realistic" art styles. FMA might be borderline on that, and is about as far towards the kiddie style as I will go. Loved some of the Hayao Miyazaki ones, though- Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, and Kiki's Delivery Service are all really good, with great characters, stories, and art. Hmm, why didn't anyone mention those before? All of them have great settings, too. Princess Mononoke is another good one for fantasy.
On the other end of the spectrum, there is stuff like Evangelion and Gundam wing, which isn't as much useful as fantasy, but are still great stories and settings in their own rights. Voltron and Robotech are in that category, too. You'd be surprised what you can find for good anime fantasy- you just have to know where to look! |

I suppose it's safe now to confess that I modelled much predictably corrupt behaviour of that plotting little worm, Porphyris Cadorna, in no small part after the antics of several handpicked politicians.

Indeed. It should have been remade into 'modern animation,' though, and extended to 24 more episodes at least.
The Legend of Legendary Heroes is also quite interesting. All the kingdoms are magocracries. And the concept of Alpha Stigma is brilliant. |

I wonder why no one mentioned Majipoor. I think it's one of the most detailed and fascinating fantasy settings. And it's peopled by great characters like Valentine, Prankipin, and Confalume. |

Imardin [The Black Magician trilogy by Trudi Canavan] is one of the most unforgettable settings I've ever read. It's as colorful as Sonea's adventures. |

I have nearly a full set of the 2e trading cards that I mined for years for NPCs. I bought them at a deep discount at the local Newbury Comics long ago. If anybody is interested, let me know. I have outgrown their usefulness, but them suckers were a gem and I imagine tough to find these days.
Just thought I'd add that MtG is a veritable gold mine for ideas. Also the most expensive hobby I've picked up since women. |

MtG is MORE expensive than women...I still use my first Lord of the Pit as a book mark (someone somewhere was talking about bookmarks...)
Of course, the Lord of the Pit has probably become some second rate henchman in the ranks of MtG these days...
I've just revised my favorite setting...I've been reading more and more about Golarion, and well...it is coming close to the Forgotten Realms for me. I see in it a very good customer service oriented campaign world.
That may sound weird...but it is true. Paizo is running Golarion like a Mega-Campaign world...and it is working well for them as the Dungeon Master!
Unfortunately for them...I'm not really interested in any crunch that they have for it really; I'm thinking of changing things here at home and running a 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons game in Golarion with my kids.
As for other campaign worlds:
I have to admit that R. R. Martin's world is better for having Sean Bean in its ranks on HBO! |

This thread makes me want to ask - Anyone read Thieves' World?
I have been thinking about picking up some used copies of the books but haven't yet made the leap. I know Lynn Abbey also wrote a few novels for TSR.
While I do love Hyboria and the Young Kingdoms, I really loved the trippy fantasy/sci-fi setting of the Hawkmoon novels. Londra in particular is a spectacularly creepy and wonderfully complex, dark society. Flame lances vs. ornithopters. Drool!
No one here likes Exalted? |

I read Thieves' World books many years ago, the entire handful which existed at the time. Some great characters, ideas, and even stories ... but overall the setting just seemed too shallow for my tastes. As if the many authors were overly careful and timid about stepping on each other's work.
The d20 Thieves' World accessories were generally quite good (better than most OGL), though I've never really made much use of them. |
