Hi, I was wondering which Named characters in the realms would likely be able to be well statted out as "masters in dispelling". You know, ignoring the actual builds presented for these folk in the books, but instead talking about what they DO, who would likely have a build something along the lines of one of those "ultimate dispeller in 3.5e" builds. If you must know, the best way in the rules to do this is do something like Cloistered Cleric 1/Wizard Abjurer 3/Master Specialist 6/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7/Archmage 1/Master Specialist +2, with a specific list of appropriate feats.

So who would be somewhere along the lines of having abilities that could be described as being 'along that build'? If not an individual character, where would one be most likely to find Heroic classed dispelling types that use the tricks that this level of optimization and focus enables?

Halruaan magehounds perhaps. Their job is to hunt down rogue (as in fugitives, not thieves) magic users. An epic magehound could have such a build complemented by the Halruaan Magehound PrC in the Shining South regionbook.

I'm mostly closely aligned with the idea of "taking what group x or individual y can actually DO in the books, and building a build that does that stuff" rather than "using prestige classes as associated with groups for those actual groups, or the writeups of actual individuals as given in the stat blocks."

In this case, the Incantatrix CLASS would be the go to prestige class for whatever group of sorcerers and wizards happen to be the 'best in the realms' at the task of blowing stuff up, and the incantatrixes themselves would be statted according to what they actually do in the books (which, from what I hear, is mostly very limited abjuration, in a way that is somehow not versatile? Maybe they're Focused Abjurers...).

On that note, what group is known as coming up with the arcanists that ARE best at 'blowing stuff up', and is therefore worthy of the Incantatrix prestige class as it is written up?

I recall that Incanters/Incantrices are quite good at dispelling. As are lucky Wild Mages. Particular subclasses like Spellfilchers excel at particular dispelling tasks, as do Mystran priests.

So the incantatars / incantatrixes would be best using one of the 'less versatile' dispelling builds, maybe? Maybe they could be sorcerers with an overly focused spell list? I'd say Warlocks, but the best dispel stuff with Warlock requires Illumians, and those are more that text/word god enabled than Mystra focused types, naturally...

*checks* Oh, wait, we might have to throw out the Inquisition based cleric tricks. Though Divine Defiance + A Nightstick + a Reliquary Holy Symbol should still work..

What god is most likely to sponsor the Church Inquisitor prestige class, or what church will likely have them?

One of the best dispellers is an Archivist/Church Inquisitor type. Is there anyone written up in the lore that acts more like that type of cleric sort of thing? A church type tracking down people that use (especially divine) based forbidden lore, and countering them specifically? Does Amn do that?

Denier and Helm seem to be likely sponsors for protecting the world from forbidden texts; maybe even Mystra, Azuth, or Oghma. Bane, Cyric, Mask, and especially Shar might be interested in controlling or distributing dark lore. In a way, inquisitors of different types might work for every established church; almost every single one of the powers could consider some type of lore forbidden, dangerous, pariah, or too sacred to be sullied by mortals.

Thanks!

Could someone maybe tell me something about what, say, someone who associates with the group of folk known as Incantatrixes SHOULD and SHOULD NOT be able to do?

The Srinshee uses a 'build' which is far superior to the one you mentioned above; it breaks the action-economy in such a way as to provide NI spells/round.

Okay, I looked up 'Srinshee', and it looks like she only got 2e stats.

What specific things is she capable of doing?

The Srinshee uses "Srinshee's Spell Shift" in conjunction with Epic Counterspelling from PGtF.
Also, and 3.5 character build description which includes the word "Nightstick" must immediately be dismissed. LMAO... Nightstick!
