I am not fond of liches, but one of my friends loves this class. For information on how to play one, I suggest these to articles:

Character Class: Dread Necromancer

The dread necromancer is probably one of the few classes of 3.5 that needs little (if any) tweaking 'cuz it's that good. Power-wise it's right up with there with the druid, cleric, and wizard. The class contains a feature or upgrade with every level. It casts arcane spells which can easily be augmented by meta-magic feats and it has a Familiar if you want to buff that up as well.

The only problem this class really runs into is the cost of it's spell components (which can be significant) and the RP that comes with playing a character who loves dead people and using them for tools.

Personally, I love this class and have seen it become VERY effective at the gaming table.
