Well met forum members. I'm curious to what the opinions of this board are concerning a few things.

1. First, I'm curious what the boards opinions on The Legend of Drizzt books. By that standard, what is your opinion of R.A. Salvatore in general (both Forgotten Realms books and non Forgotten Realms books).

2. What is your opinion of The Harpers series of books. I bought some recently and they are on their way. What do you guys think of the books and the series (and really The Harpers in general).

This question may have been asked, but probably such a long time ago that it's dead thread.

Thanks for the responses.

It's hit or miss for the Harpers books. Some of them are really good, some of them are not. And some books are loved by some and hated by others...

Me, I really loved some of the Harpers books, and wouldn't think of rereading some of the other ones...

As for the group, I like the Harpers, but I like the Moonstars a lot more.

Yeah. I've heard mixed reviews on the Harpers books. From what I can deduct, each Harpers book is unique to the reader. You may like some that others hate, and you might hate some that others love. It's very polarized from what I've heard.

Granted, I'll probably read all of them at least once through. Still, I'd rather read a bad book that adds to the world of Forgotten Realms, than no books at all.

It really depends on what you're looking for in terms of stories. I enjoyed most of them, to varying degrees. And some, like Elaine's and Ed's contributions to the series, I re-read regularly. Some I've only read once, and that's enough. While there are one or two I'd like to read again, like Masquerades.

As for opinions on the Harpers in general, and as an organisation... they're one of my favourites groups in the Realms, right along with their schismatic Moonstar brothers and sisters. I still find it disappointing that the concept of the Schism has been largely ignored and likely won't see any further attention in the Realmslore of the future. But that hasn't stopped me from plotting my own ideas, based largely on past commentary made by Steven Schend.

Elaine Cunningham's Harper novels are excellent!

Indeed! In fact, I should like to note that Elaine is the one author that everyone here seems to like.

I like most of the Harper novels I have read (including the ones Wooly cares the least for), but there are a couple of the early ones I haven't read. As a group I like the Harpers, but I change them somewhat in my game. I don't want to use the Harper schism, but I like much of the information given about them, therefore combining this with the Harpers, making them a bit more dubious.

I don't care much for Salvatore and Drizzt though.

Yeah. I've met others who aren't big fans of Salvatore/Drizzt. Some have told me they downright hate both. To each his own I guess.

I kind of like the way he writes. It's not the best or anything, but I've been forced to read worse. Though I understand if people don't like that either.

I dunno. I guess I technically do like him considering I just bought "The Cleric Quintet". It's pretty good so far. I hope it keeps that way.

I'll keep ya'll informed .

IMO the Drizzt books that are good are: Icewind Dale Trilogy; Dark Elf Trilogy; The Legacy; and Starless Night. After that it loses it's touch IMO. I did really like the Silent Blade and Servant of the Shard, but more for Entreri than Drizzt. The rest I could completely do without.
