The people of Samarach, have long guarded their realm with illusions. This did not change when Cyric the mad absorbed the portfolio of Illusions from a dead Leira. One point of contention with Cyric was his worshipers could never make headway in Samarach, and his temples were always overthorown or abandoned. The Cyricites simply thought the people of Samarach stubborn and stupid for believing their Patron Goddess Leira still alive.
Cyric Worshipers prayed and chanted to their mad lord, for the people of Samarach to lose the ability of illusions. Cyric answered their prayers and the school of illusions was denied the people of Samarach. This caused panic throughout the clergy of Leira. They too prayed and chanted, and their prayers were answered. The people of Samarach learned a new magic, the magic of shadow, for what is illusion truly but shadows and tricks.
Followers of Shar were puzzled by this, as none of the shadow mages of Samarach paid homage or even lip service to Shar. When Shar became aware of this , she simply shut the power of the shadow weave off from the illusionists of Samarach.
The illusionists had no idea they were cut off from the shadow weave, because they still had their power. Shar new, the illusionists were now using Mystra's weave. Cyric who cut them off from the school of Illusions, knew they were using the shadow weave. When Cyric and Shar met Samarach was discussed. Shar told him she cut the casters off from the shadow weave. This made Cyric furious, for the only way those mages could be casting illusions was because Mystra forbid Cyric to cut them off from Illusions by ensuring they accessed the school through her weave. Shar was powerless to stop them from using illusions, but she was satisfied as they were not using the shadow weave. Cyric however was in a rage at Mystra. Neither god new they were off the mark.
Leira, The Lady of Mists and Goddess of Illusions was slain by Cyric as she was betrayed by Mask. The shock and hurt of betrayal by Mask was followed by a merciless destruction of her divinity. Deception and Illusion was absorbed by Cyric increasing his power, and Leira faded to the Astral as a floating corpse.
Yet no divinity was able to pinpoint exactly where in the astral Leira lay in repose. Ofcourse most deities did not give it much thought. Mask was the only deity to search for her yet he could never find her. Mask felt a slight tinge of guilt over the betrayal and thought maybe there was some way he might be able to aid her, to make up for his betrayal, for it has long been suspected that Mask and Leira were lovers of sorts (Sune knows the truth but has never spoken of it.)
Cyric brooded over being thwarted by Mystra and Shar continued her scheming. The illusionists of Samarach kept casting illusions despite Cyric. Worshipers of Leira elsewhere on Faerun never fully converted to worship of Cyric, and those that refused to believe Leira dead, were cut off from illusions. These followers would pray to their dead goddess, and somehow regain the ability to cast illusions. Again Cyric boiled over Mystra thwarting him.
In 1385 the Year of Blue Fire, Cyric's plan to destroy Mystra for her numerous transgressions (Samarach and Illusionists being just one)was finally coming to fruition. Shar and Cyric invaded Dweomerheart, and trapped Mystra, yet before a blow could be struck, Tyr parried from ambush, and Bane assaulted Cyric (See the second time of troubles entry.) Cyric in insane mad fury destroyed himself in a final attempt to destroy Mystra, Kelemvor, and Bane, forever destroying Dweomerheart.
Mask retrieved his stolen portfolio of intrigue. He had planned to make an attempt for deception and lies as well, but they were nowhere to be found.
Throughout Faerun, those worshipers that stayed faithful in their idea that Leira was not dead received a vision of swirling mists bursting from a dark sun. As Priests of Cyric howled in mad agony, those that worshiped Cyric as a deceiver, liar, and illusionist, received the same vision as Leira's faithful, except this vision included each Cyricist suffocating in the mist.
In Presper there was rejoice, for as the priests of Cyric cried in agony as they lost their lives in the Mistkeep Of the Dark Sun, the avatar of Leira manifested as a cyclone of mists, heralding her return to the pantheon of Faerun.

Excellent work, Mournblade! I suspect I'll be adopting this (or some slight variant of it) into my own Realms.
Looking forward to the tale of the Shadow Weave... and trying very hard to be patient... |
Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.
If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic. |
