The ever nice to read James Maliszewski opines on the Need to Advance the Timeline in game settings right here at Grognardia: Thoughts occasioned by Traveller. The post starts out about the Traveller setting, but has food for thought relevant to any game setting.

Review, discuss.

Well I mostly agree with him, although I like some movement, but then in the quiet way of the 1ed. setting. Mostly because it was a good way for Ed to give more hints and details about the setting. For example, to use a later change, I don't mind that Azoun in the end died, but I dislike that it was part of a catastrophe. It would have been better (for me) if he died in his sleep and various intrigues and plots started to try to decide who should rule. Plenty of intrigues, adventures and plots, but also relatively easy to change or ignore if you want to. But then again I can always to this myself if I want to.

Unfortunately I am in a minority here I think.

That would have been a good way to go Jorkens.

Jorkens and froglegg: In the specific case of Azoun IV, I half agree with you. I like the fact that Azoun died in battle; I can't honestly see him going any other way, except by heartstop in a tumble with some noble lady or other (and that kind of exit creates more work for Vangey and Caladnei). A peaceful death isn't something I can associate with the Lion of Cormyr. I do, however, agree that it wasn't necessary to have the kingdom torn apart around him... particularly the senseless destruction of the Lords Who Sleep and the equally senseless death of Tanalasta. In my Realms, both are still around.

[cancerous rant amputated]

Anyway, that's all I've got on this matter; when I finally have my Realms ready for perusal, I'll be posting it here somewhere, just as Jorkens has done with his. Hopefully I'm not referencing Sage-time here, but I keep getting sidetracked by Pathfinder and a collection of hybrid rules I'm working on.

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

Thats why I like it. Its the natural thing that no one would expect. With the heroic role he has played in the Realm it would be very difficult for many people to believe that he has died and even fewer who would believe that it had been wholly natural. Intrigues everywhere you look and most of them based around false assumptions. Every one looking for someone to blame or proofs of misdeeds, the few clear heads trying to calm things down being looked at with suspicion. Are they trying to cover things up?
