Who on the face of Toril can still speak: Aragrakh, Hulgokyn, Loross, Netherese, Roushoum, Seldruin and Thorass?
A simple question, but might be hard to answer!

All of the shadovar would speak Netherese and likely a decent amount of Loross.

Don't mind me disrupting the ongoing discussion but I just thought about something that is somewhat connected to the question:
Does casting the 1st-level-spell "comprehend languages" also provide the ability to read and understand any of those ancient and forgotten languages mentioned above, i.e. old netherese writings?
What about the spell "tounges"? |

Actually, only "comprehend languages" will allow the reading of the old netherese (and seldruin, loross, thorass...) writings. The "tongues" spell affects only speech, permitting the caster to talk in the lost languages and understand them. |

Aragrakh, there is a linnorm in the Year of Rogue Dragons, he should speak it.
Hulgorkyn, probably the Ondonti orcs, at least their sages.

Why?
It's Bedine, BTW (and we wonder why so many folks think FR is uber-derivitive). |

I think for wizards and priests, it doesn't really matter if they speak a dead language or not, for there are various spells that could allow them to read written texts and understand spoken words of any ancient/dead language, even those from other worlds. I remember in Shadowrealm, Rivalen cast a spell that translated a text from the temple of Shar in the world Ephyras (sp?).

Larloch is described as speaking many languages that are now lost and forgotten, certainly including Loross and Netherese.
Dragons? Lichs? Old elves? Phezult? Sages who study Linguistics or lore particular to a lost civilization? |
