Shar was delighted when Mask surrendered his divinity over to her, finally paying for a long forgotten debt. She desperately wanted the portfolio of shadows from the Master of Thieves, but what she could not have realized, perhaps blinded by her darkness, is that Mask wanted her portfolio of Night and Secrets.

In 1374 the Year of Lightning Storms, just before the start of the Second Time of Troubles, Mask surrendered his divinity to the Dark Goddess. Before his death, Shar revealed his true name, but Mask held onto his secrets well. Mask wove an elaborate deception, where as he was slain, he inhabited the very shadow of Shar herself. Essence was absorbed by Erevis Cale, but it was not any of Mask's essence, it was in fact a portion of Shar's which passed to her formerly imprisoned herald, Kesson Rel. Secrets and Shadows are practically one, and when Mask was absorbed by Shar he usurped secrets into his shadow without Shar ever suspecting. He deceived Shar and in effect Kesson, by releasing the essence in Shar that once belonged to Imbrandul. For the time being Mask was content to lie in Shar's shadow, and hold onto secrets.

While inhabiting Shar's shadow, he was privy to all of her plans. For ten years Shar held onto the portfolio of Shadows, and mask tricked her into beleiving the portfolio of thieves and thievery was actually that of which she lost; caverns, dungeons, and the Underdark. When she finalized plans with Cyric to destroy the Weave, Mask knew every detail.

At this moment Mask took a gamble and decided to strike. Shar's shadow slinked away from the Supreme Throne where the meeting was held, and headed straight for the barrens of Doom and Despair. Mask, the Master of all Thieves stole secrets and night from Shar. The Lady of Loss only felt her decreased power when Cyric noticed she cast no shadow any longer.

Shar was furious, and searched the planes, never suspecting Mask would be hiding in the house of the deity of Hatred. Cyric and Shar knew they had to move, for Shar knew that Mask had deceived her.

Cyric and Shar launched their plan, and it was foiled by Bane and Tyr. (see the Second time of troubles entry). Cyric destroyed his divinity in insane, mad, defiance, and Mask stole back the explosive divinity containing Intrigue, and Deception.

His rise was nearly immediate, and he possessed even more power than before the Tablets of Fate were stolen. For Mask no longer was just the Master of All Thieves, and the Lord of Shadow. He regained his title of Lord of Intrigue, and was mantled with a new one, The Master of the Night, and the Keeper of Secrets.

As Shar's power waned, Mask finally achieved his goal of Greater Divinity.

Shar's portfolio was shattered. Always she held greater power than her hated sister Selune, and now thier power was equal. Shar no longer could count the Greater gods among her peers. Shar was simply the goddess of Forgetfulness, Darkness, and Loss. The lady of Loss, finally felt the sting of her portfolio, and she did not like it.

Not a bad idea. It certain fits with my view of Mask. He did something very simular in my campaign when Cyric used Mask (in his sword form) to kill Lliera (Goddess of Illusions). In my Realms, the two were lovers, but he lacked the time to warn her of the ambush. So. rather than kill her, he kept her safe inside the sword (along with Kelemvor) and eventually relesed her once Cyrcic when mad.

I probably won't have to ever worry about the events of the spellplague (currrently my players wanted to explore a campaign that is set just as the elves are begin leaving the Dales for Evermeet). But if we ever do get to that spot on the timeline, I might use this idea. Good work.

Nice story, and does not contradict what we know about those deities. And one that is both believable and could happen in FR. Good job Mournblade!

Interesting...Though I like Shar and won't want her to be in that situation. Still, makes sense. And possible plot for a novel.

Yup, I like it. Though I'm not sure his new portfolios are 'powerful' enough to grant him the Greater Power status, maybe intermediate would be more balanced (though more powerful than before ToT, maybe 1 or 2 divine ranks higher).

I thought about that a bit before I wrote it. I figured he already had shadows and thieves. Thieves I think is the big one there. I gave him secrets because it is fitting for mask. Also in my campaign the players have gone through Cormyr-to Anauroch, essentially defeating Shar. I thought it was time for Shar to be knocked down a notch with the defeats my PC's have been giving her followers since like 2003.

Considering what Shar's portfolio was, I think that mask is in even a stronger position. I have him at Divine rank 16 (2 below shar one below cyric), and I brought Bane up to 18.

There's so many possibilities. Writing this, I had to write several parts over, as I tried writing in the other possibilities to see what 'sounded' the best. I wrote Mask as an intermediate originally, but it just felt like he did too much. Hey if Cyric can go from Mortal to Greater, I am sure Mask could go from Lesser to Greater:)

Just an idea...instead of enervating Shar, why not destroy her and have a new one: SHAR 2.0, as Mystra seems to be Mystra 3.0

It has a relation to my question in Qs for Ed, which is not yet answered by THO/Ed...

Is there something special about Shar? Many deities, evil and good, were destroyed and came back to life, Mystra being the best example. Yet Shar remains, despite that there are many evil greater deities (should they put their mind to it, which is very likely, considering Shar's new toy, the SW) who could destroy her and steal her portfolio (and her toy).

Dennis and Nicolai, I have full plans of Reducing Shar further. I never liked that she was more powerful than Selune. I had one version where she became the Lesser goddess of Forgetfulness, because Zon Kuthon from Golarion attacked her to get into the realms.

As it is I had a better story for Zon Kuthon and made him a demigod serving Loviatar (A former high Patriarch of Ilmater). I intend to reinvent Shar in some way for my campaign,

I would amend this..

Mask did not take Deception out of Cyric's mad explosion. Previously I thought he was the god of deception as well, but I just checked my old gray box and FR adventures and that belonged to Leira. I have other ideas for deception now. I think I finally figured out that Leira is going to be the newly ressurected mistress of the Shadow Weave.

pouvre Shar.

I think Leira is a good candidate.

How would you go about resurrecting her? Last time I checked, she's dead, killed by the crazy Cyric.

Well as some previous posters have indicated, the written lore says her worshippers always believed she was alive but weaving an elaborate illusion.

What better way to resurrect/reappear than to have her original portfolio now freed up?
