Actually, I didn't know what to call this post, but here goes. I am done with the crunch bit of what I hope to submit for the upcoming Candlekeep Compendium, and would like some feedback. These three items all have a bit of a motorcyclist slant to them, as that is also the slant of the article. Hey, the Compendium is all about "What If"s so why not have something that was possibly made by a mad gnomish tinkerer or Leonardo Da Vinci genius.

I don't apologise for the d20 SRD rules used, so if you're not familiar with 3.0E/3.5E just grin and bear it.

Edit2: After taking MT's advice and initially changing the "velocisteed" to a "Lantanna velocisteed," I have decided to change it back. By using the term "Lantanna," I may just be infringing on WotC's Realms IP. So if you use it in the Realms, by all means call it a "Lantanna velocisteed" (and even "Lantanna riding leathers" and "Lantanna riding helmet") if you want. Or whatever may be appropiate in Eberron or some other place. Let me rather just keep the name as generic (and thereby still covered by the OGL) as possible. Sorry for the edit-bump.
quote:
Riding Leathers
The shoulder, elbow, spine, hip and knee protectors of this armour are made of leather that has been stiffened by boiling in oil. The rest of the armour is made of softer and more flexible leather. It includes a thin layer of removable, quilted fabric worn underneath the jacket to provide comfort against the cold (as a Cold Weather Outfit). The suit includes leather gauntlets or gloves, and sturdy boots.
Cost: 10 gp
Armour Bonus: 0
Maximum Dexterity Bonus: 10
Armour Check Penalty: 0
Arcane Spell Failure Chance: 5% (somatic)
Speed: 30 ft. / 20 ft.
Weight: 10 lb.
Don: 1 minute (3 rounds for the leather gauntlets or gloves)
Don Hastily: 5 rounds (2 rounds for the leather gauntlets or gloves)
Remove: 1 minute (2 rounds for the leather gauntlets or gloves)
Benefit: If you fall off your mount, the damage is the same but the first 2d6 (or 2d4 without the leather gauntlets or gloves) is nonlethal damage.
Normal: If you fall off your mount, you take the appropriate falling damage (at least 1d6 points).
Special: You take a -1 penalty on all Escape Artist checks, Open Lock checks, Sleight of Hand checks, and Use Rope checks while wearing this armour. If you remove the leather gauntlets or gloves (see above), ignore this penalty but reduce the benefit (see above).

Riding Helmet
A visored helmet made of leather that has been stiffened by boiling in oil. It includes a thin layer of quilted fabric affixed to the inside of the helmet. It is securely fastened with a chin-strap.
Cost: 5 gp (+5 gp if fitted with helmet spikes)
Armour Bonus: +1
Arcane Spell Failure Chance: 5% (verbal)
Weight: 2 lb.
Don: 3 rounds
Don Hastily: 1 round
Remove: 1 round
Benefit: If you fall off your mount, the damage is the same but the first 2d6 is nonlethal damage.
Normal: If you fall off your mount, you take the appropriate falling damage (at least 1d6 points).
Special: You take a -2 penalty on all Listen checks while wearing this helmet. You can bash with a riding helmet instead of using it for defence. A riding helmet used as a melee weapon is treated as a light improvised weapon (-4 penalty on attack rolls) and deals damage as a light shield of its size (see below).
Damage (S): 1d2 (1d3 if fitted with helmet spikes)
Damage (M): 1d3 (1d4 if fitted with helmet spikes)
Critical: x2
Damage Type: Bludgeoning (Piercing if fitted with helmet spikes)
quote:
Velocisteed
This construct resembles a bicycle crafted of sturdy metal plates, pipes, parts and springs. A whistle of steam and the smooth click of gears and chains accompany the movements of its spiked, wooden wheels. It has a built-in bulls-eye lantern above the front wheel, just in front of the handlebars.
Medium Construct
Hit Dice: 4d10+20 (42 hp)
Initiative: +0
Speed: 300 ft. (60 squares)
Armor Class: 15 (+5 natural), touch 10, flat-footed 15
Base Attack/Grapple:

Full Attack:
Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft.
Special Attacks: Crash attack
Special Qualities: Construct traits, throttle, easily crashed
Saves: Fort +1, Ref +1, Will -4
Abilities: Str 15, Dex 10, Con –, Int –, Wis 1, Cha 1
Skills:
Feats:
Environment: Any
Organization: Solitary
Challenge Rating: 2
Treasure: None
Alignment: Always neutral
Advancement:
Level Adjustment:
Crash attack (Ex): A rider-less velocisteed cannot attack, regardless of threats to itself, until mounted by a rider. If the rider is in a position to Charge an opponent, he can use the velocisteed as a weapon to perform a crash attack. For every 25 ft. of speed beyond the first 100 ft. the velocisteed is travelling, it does 1d6 points of damage (up to a maximum of 8d6 points) to the opponent. This attack ignores the rider’s attack bonus and the opponent’s Armour Class and is considered a full-round action. The velocisteed is also considered to have easily crashed.
Throttle (Ex): A velocisteed is built to respond to physical commands given to it by a rider turning its throttle or guiding it with its handlebars. A rider-less velocisteed remains motionless until mounted by a rider. A rider can direct it to move and can spur it to ever greater speed (up to a maximum of 300 ft.). A velocisteed is considered to have easily crashed if its rider becomes unconscious, stunned, paralyzed, dead, or otherwise unable to function.
Easily crashed (Ex): A velocisteed is built to achieve great speed when properly controlled by a rider. If the rider fails his ride check, or otherwise crashes, he takes the appropriate falling damage. For every 50 ft. of speed beyond the first 50 ft. the velocisteed is travelling, the rider takes 1d6 points of falling damage (up to a maximum of 5d6 points). Additionally, for every 40 ft. of speed the velocisteed is travelling, it also takes 1d6 points of damage (up to a maximum of 8d6 points). If the velocisteed is destroyed by this damage, the rider must roll a d20. If he rolls a natural 20, the velocisteed’s engine explodes, dealing 2d6 fire damage to anyone within a 5 ft. radius.

I picture some hirsute Shield Dwarves riding the lands in search of some mercenary work...

In my Greyhawk campaign, I had 'Hog Riders' - quite literally, Orcs riding giant boars. And let your items there, they were completely based on biker-gangs.

I would make the last entry there 'Lantanese' to better fit Realmslore, but thats just me.

Orks do have that biker feel to them.

I liked playing Space Orks in Warhammer 40K...

Heh heh heh... reminds me of Warhammer's "Brett's Boar Boyz". Unit motto - "Hit 'em hard, hit'em fast, hit 'em below the belt!"

Ouch. On a related note, my hubby keeps bugging me to let his dwarf battlerager find a gnome to invent a "saddlepult" for him to launch off of his dire boar mount.... He wears spiked armor and helmet. Nuff said.
