These are the character races I've had in games I've run: including a 4 and a half year Ravenloft game, a 2 year homemade campaign, a 1 and a half home made campaign, a 11 month FR game, my current FR game, and a few shorter games. What races have you allowed players to play in games you've run?

Human (the vast majority of the characters folks have played were human in any of my D&D games)

High/Silver/Moon Elf

Gold/Sun/Grey Elf

Wood Elf

Drow Elf

Half moon elf

half wood elf

Dwarf (Hill, Shield, Mountain, Gully)

Rock Gnome

Lightfoot Halfling

Strongheart Halfling

1/4 Orge 3/4 human

Aasimar

Dwogre (half dwarf/half ogre, they were a standard race in the game world I created)

Githzeria

Hobgoblin

Mul (from darksun, in my ravenloft game)

Trollborn (they were from the 2e Vikings handbook & basically smarter half-ogres, this pc was in my Ravenloft game)

Let’s see…

Human, Elf (Gold and Moon), Eladrin (for the 4E Realms game), Drow, Half-Drow, Aasimar.

Thinking back on it sure brings back good memories, to be sure. :)

What are all the different races I've let play? Um...

Humans, Sun Elf, Wood Elf, Wild Elf, Drow, Fire Genesi, Catfolk, Kobold, Half-Giant, weretiger elf, Ogre, Nymph, a half-celestial warforged, and a deep gnome.

Those are the ones I can remember. The Ogre and Nymph were two kid players (The 10 year old male was the ogre and just hit stuff, and the 7 year old girl was a nymph). The deep gnome was also played by a six year old boy, who went out of his way to make sure he always had hair be it a wig or any other way. He refused to be bald.

I love PMs! Please send me a message. Even if its Hi.

During 2e: standard phb races plus half-orc, firbolg, voadkyn, minotaur and vaati was the most exotic.

In 3e we started planar campaigns and almost everything was allowed. There was one party with all types of yuan-ti, and some crazy combinations like nathri-ghost elf, half-fey-wild dwarf, voidmind changeling, fire-souled maug or a nycaloth.

Right now the party is less planar consisting of an rogue axiomite (from Golarion), a halfling (Five Shires), a human (Illuskan/Rashemi), a half-goblin (blue), and a human (Talfiric with a Firre eladrin ancestor).

I'm pretty much open-minded about all races so long as it's not done to completly break or other wise make the character unstoppable. Also, I tend to drop Level Adjustments by taking away additional HD. For example, if one player wants to play a Minotaur, I take away their (what 5?) HD and make them a level 1 (and 1 HD) character. I think that takes down the LA to a minimum of 1.

Well it all depends on what kind of game we are playing. I have played a Ut'thuk barbarian with an effective level of + 1, but that was in a more random game. In our main game we allow all of the standard huminoid races. We do not however allow races with higher efffective level like drow!

I usually don't have restrictions, as long as they have a good background and aren't too over the top...

In general I wouldn't have any restrictions on race, but for some reason nobody has ever stated the desire to play something other than the core races listed in the 3e PHB. I would be very hesitant regarding allowing monster races in my games, though. I think the addition of tieflings and genasi to the list of playable races is rather unfortunate. Especially if Neeshka from the second Neverwinter Nights video game is any indication... Oh, how I loathe her!
I'm not saying a tiefling/genasi character can work, though, but they generally get chosen for all the wrong reasons.

Personally, as a player, I have a hard time not choosing a plain human. I guess I'm just too conservative, despite playing an elf now in another campaign in which I don't DM. Of course, being a human in an all elven party on Evermeet is just as healthy as declaring that Cyric is your only true love in the middle of Zhentil Keep.

My attitude towards always choosing humans is changing after seeing people play some very nice half-elf characters and a very cool half-orc cleric of Tymora, who was constantly boasting about his many successes and sheer amount of luck.

Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to know that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice. – Robert Frost (1874 - 1963)

I've got a Minotaur druin in my game right now and a player that just loves the warforged and wants to make one as soon as possible. Most of my pther players stick to humans (that extra feat is just too good to pass up) or elves. I'd be willing to allow just about anything if my gang approves and its not done to simply overrun the game. I had a player decide he wants to give up on his half-orc cleric to switch to a half-dragon half-orc until he saw that maxed out he'd have a Strength of 30!

I allow most any race, so long as it's of an equal ELC with the other party members. I had one player who wanted to try a chain-devil with a LA buy-off, but that didn't really work out. Never again. But in my games, I've had: humans, elves, dwarves, a hobgoblin, drow, a gnome, a fire genesi, a half-dragon, half-elves, halflings, lythari, a warforged, and others I can't even remember, but most have been pretty fun. My only restriction is that they have to play a race that is found on my realm, but there are plenty to choose from (except for the chain-devil, but that was a special case with a backstory) so it's not usually a problem. I have occasionally even allowed races from supplement materials like the ghost elf. We called him the walking night-light....

Appart from the usual races, I've had people play Half-Celestial Drow and a Current Bun. So I guess I'll allow pretty much anything given reasonable excuse or sufficient volume of alcohol...

In general, almost all my players have only played base races, as far as my memory goes... We're currently going to play City of the Spider Queen, so there will be a share amount of Drow players in the party, with the exception of one, who will be playing a Dreagloth (with reduced LA from +4 to +2, since the rest of the party has their LA reduced to +0 instead of +2).

'LA-races' can be quite a pain in the *ss in my opinion. In general, I just want the races to be balanced inside the party. If everybody is going with a +2 race / template w/e, that's fine with me; I can still make the monsters stronger, more HD, BAB, etc. Although I restrict players from playing a race / monster / template with a LA greater than +4. Well, I guess it all depends on the situation; +4 will not be tolerated if the rest of the party play humans. In general, no more than a +2 LA compared to the lowest PC's LA. This is so it stays fair with the rest of the party, in the beginning, and towards the end of a campaign. Nobody likes to be the epic-level mercenary of the wizard..

O yeah, woodwwad; would you mind telling me some more of your so called Dwogre - half dwarf/half ogre - race? I'd love to hear something about that in the perspective of lore, and maybe some basic stats, special abilities and the like. Thanks in advance.

Dwogre

+3 Str, -2 Dex, +3 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha

Medium size, Dwogres adverage between 6 & a half feet to 7 feet in height

base land speed 30 feet.

+1 racial bonus on saving throws against poison

+1 racial bonus on saving throws against spells & spell-like abilities

+2 racial bonus to any one craft or profession skill, Dwogres are simple minded but have excellent focus & take their work very seriously

+2 racial bonus on Intimidate checks. Dwogres are large & can be highly furousus if provoked or in a bad mood.

Automatic Languages: Common & Giant.

Favored Class: Fighter

These were a standard player race in a homemade setting I ran several campaigns in. The majority of these mixed race creatures appeared in the largest human/mixed city in the world, Bale, as a product of the highly populated Dwarven & Ogre ghettoes. In my campain world Ogres, Humans & Dwarves could all crossbreed. Dwarves were a fall culture, they no longer spoke their own language & it was lost & they forgot their own gods, cursing them for the plight that befell their people long ago which I'm not going to go into as it would take a long time to explain.

Hope this was of some help to you & thanks for asking.
