I'm writing a bit of fan fiction and was wondering if anyone could tell me what Malars avatar appearance was during the Time of Troubles. I know he can assume different forms but wasn't sure if while he was stuck in his avatar form if he still had the shape-changing ability.

Thanks!

I don't immediately recall that being specifically referenced in the Realmslore. All we know about Malar during the Time of Troubles, was detailed in Faiths & Avatars. And I can't remember anything about his actual appearance being mentioned.

Might have to check up on that.

I checked fine Sage, and the appearance is not mentioned in the part of his entry during the Time of Troubles. It mentions he stalked the "length and breadth of Faerun" (p105), but doesn't mention a form. Given who he fought with, I would venture to guess that he appeared as his "master of the Hunt" avatar.

If I may quote again, just to describe the horror of the form (also from Page 105 of Faiths & Avatars) "Malar appears as a black-furred, 12-foot-tall humanoid with red eyes above a whuffling, flesh draped hole rather than a nose and mouth." It goes on to say he has antlers he uses to slash and stab targets, and they seem to be morphic (able to appear and disappear) at will.

This would make sense given he battled most of the other nature deities during the Time of Troubles.

My two coppers.

Keep in mind, though, that the avatars in the Time of Troubles were greatly reduced from what you'd otherwise expect. I think it likely that even if Malar retained any shape-changing ability (a big if, thinks I), then it would have been greatly reduced.

Seeing how many (if not all) deities during the Time of Troubles had to inhabit a certain corporeal form from Toril, I would think that Malar actual took the form of a certain wild animal.

With what I know from Malar, these are likely the possible creatures he took as a mortal body:
- A predatory cat of sorts (ex: Puma/Cougar, Lion, Lynx, Bobcat, Leopard, Cheetah, or Jaguar)
- A bear (Especially with how Malar purportedly "swayed the Blue Bear tribe away from Uthgar's worship.").
- A krenshar (3.5 Ed. Monster Manual)
- A wolf (natural or monstrous), Worg, or Winter Wolf

Granted, I have trouble understanding whether Faiths & Avatars intends that Malar subsumed the Blue Bear before or after the Time of Troubles.

As a derivative of this... I've actually dropped pieces of lore in my alternate Time of Troubles-based campaign that suggests Malar's avatar form was "locked" into a stagnant feral state during the Avatar Crisis.

My thinking on this is somewhat influenced by the affect of the genetic "hyperwave bomb" on the Skrulls in the Marvel Universe. When the fall of the gods began, Malar's physical avatar/s was/were prevented from shapeshifting, trapping him in whatever form he had at the time of the Crisis.

Absolutely! I would wonder if he would just gotten rid of the horns entirely for his avatar's form, or gone with short, minotaur-like ones to allow for a goring attack? Maybe even a single rhinocerous-like horn on the top of his head (similar to the Rhek celestials). The only reason I'm thinking about this is that he fought a lot of the nature deities (nobody was listed as a "winner", but all of the ones listed didn't die).

Then again this is all theory at this point (perhaps something for the Compendium in the future). ToT and the Nature deities... hmm...

I really want to apologize for forgetting to put in my original post that the info is to help me flesh out the history for a fan fiction story I'm writing that takes place in the Realms.

I went back and edited the post. I truly hope I haven't offended anyone!

You need not worry about such concerns, Wispr. While we appreciate your intent, we also understand that not every post can always include all the information we'd like to talk about. That's why we have the EDIT function.
