Got a little announcement to make: THE SERPENT'S DAUGHTER, my first FR novel in several years.
Few elf maidens looked toward a future as bright as Azariah Craulnober's. Raised in the court of Evermeet as a royal ward, heir to the Craulnober moonblade, a skilled dancer and a promising scholar and bard, she was considered an ornament to the court and a likely choice of a second bride for the recently widowed Prince Lamruil.
All that ended the day she sailed for Evermeet in the company of her father, her half-elven swordmistress, and a human bard. When her world quite literally vanished in the cataclysm she later learned to call the Spellplague, her only chance of survival lay in convincing her "rescuers" that she could cut them in on her father's latest venture. They readily agreed, believing that the serpent's daughter would be much easier to outwit than her infamous father.
Their mistake.
There are very few "caper" novels in the Realms. I've long wanted to try my hand at one, and I loved the notion of Azariah Craulnober being forced into the family business and finding that, in many ways, she truly is her father's daughter.
This novel has been in development for quite a while. and after this week I'll be going full steam ahead. Here are all the specifics I can give you at this time: The length is 90,000 words, which is about average for a Realms novel; the first draft will be delivered on September 1 and a final version on November 15; publication will be sometime in 2012. I'll share more information as matters progress.
I'm delighted to be returning to the Realms with a new generation and new characters. Azariah is turning out to be, hands down, my favorite protagonist yet. If you're a fan or a foe of Elaith Craulnober, keep an eye out for The Serpent's Daughter!

On a related topic... Is this book going to contain any of the things we would have seen in Reclamation? |

Ooh, I so love that!!! How old is she then? I counted her age to be a little too young for marrying Lamruil...
And on the topic - you just made my day, Mrs. Cunningham! I'll stop pestering you with questions about Azariah, since I'll have most of them probably answered in this book! Oh, I'm going to tell my friends now!

Not really. The prelude is set several years after the events of Reclamation, and the main story is in current time. Though there are obvious ties to the past, this will be a new start. |

Azariah would be very young when the Spellplague hit--the elven equivalent of a teenager. She was a "toddler" when she made her first appearance in Elfsong, which took place in 1362. Her age at that point was 5. The Spellplague hit in 1385, which would make her 28.
Young for marriage, yes, but a reasonable age for a beginning of a long betrothal. |

why is being a wizard like being a drow? both are likely to find a dagger in the back from a rival or one looking to further his own goals, fame and power

The prelude is set in 1385, but the story itself is in present time. |

The best thing I heard all day.
Is it 2012 yet? |
I hope Candlekeep continues to be the friendly forum of fellow Realms-lovers that it has always been, as we all go through this together. If you don’t want to move to the “new” Realms, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with either you or the “old” Realms. Goodness knows Candlekeep, and the hearts of its scribes, are both big enough to accommodate both. If we want them to be. (Strikes dramatic pose, raises sword to gleam in the sunset, and hopes breeches won’t fall down.) Enough for now. The Realms lives! I have spoken! Ale and light wines half price, served by a smiling Storm Silverhand fetchingly clad in thigh-high boots and naught else! Ahem . . So saith Ed. <snip> love to all, THO

Elaine this is fantastic news! It is so great to have you return to the Realms. I'm very intrigued with the idea of a caper novel. This is the next best thing to finding out that "Reclaimation" is no longer cancelled.
I do however have a sense of dread for the fate of Arylin and Danilo in prologue with the spellplague. At least we would know however, unlike the fates of most other pre-spellplague characters. |
