One of my players has expressed interest in playing the Incantatrix PrC from Magic of Faerun and I was wondering if I could get some suggestions about how to handle the "School Specialization" ability as that particular mechanic has changed a bit in Pathfinder.
Specifically, the PC in question is already playing a Transmutation Specialist, so initially I felt that the player should take an additional opposition school without gaining any of the listed benefits of the Abjuration School, but now I'm not too sure that the benefits of the PrC make up for the sacrifice. Any ideas?

I don't really see much of an issue. If the player is already playing a Transmuter, they have already given up two schools, so choosing a third school to prohibit should be the same. The transmuter abilities would remain the same (since the abilities are based off Wizard levels and not Caster levels).
Edit: Aahh... I'm going off the Incantrix from Player's Guide to Faerūn which changed the School Specialization ability to Favored Studies:

At 1st level, the Incantrix gives up a school of magic so as to focus more on the remaining schools. She must choose a school of magic other than Abjuration or Divination as a prohibited school. This prohibited school is in addition to any others already chosen due to school specialization. Thus, a specialist wizard taking this prestige class has three prohibited schools instead of two.
In fact, the PGtF Incantrix is VERY different from the Magic of Faerūn Incantrix; and much easier to convert.

Thanks for the help. The version from the PGtF is a lot easier to convert. In case anyone is interested, here are the changes that were made to the Incantatrix PrC:
d6 HD
Skill requirements: Knowledge (arcana) 5 ranks, Spellcraft 5 ranks
Fort & Reflex saves - 0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3
Will saves - 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5
Focused studies - you take an additional opposed school rather than a prohibited one.
Cooperative Metamagic and Metamagic Effect - Spellcraft DC reduced to 15 + [3 x modified spell level]
This player also expressed some interest in the War Wizard and Archmage Prestige Classes and so I took the time to update those as well. I can post them too if anyone is interested. |

There's actually been an lot of discussion on the Paizo boards regarding the Archmage and why it wasn't converted over for Pathfinder (since it was included in the OGL/SRD). The reasoning from Paizo & Co was that they redeveloped the base classes so that Prestige classes like the Archmage (designed to give high-level casters something special) were no longer needed.
This, of course has been a key idea when I've been trying to stat out Realms NPCs in Pathfinder (new stats, not the ones I previously published on the WotC boards). |
