Everytime when it comes down some to some mighty characters in the realms there are a lot of people who praise him to the heavens. But if you take a look at the netheril triology he was only a mad mage with the mind of a child. He was very powerfull indeed but there where a lot of other powerfull casters too and besides his fatal Avatar spell there is no indication that was more powerfull than others (when you ignore is own proclamations that he is the greatest). Actually he was losing a war for fun against iolaums encalve while iolaum wasn't even there, so he couldn't have been that great.
So why do people still love him that much?. Is it because of the lack of information from the rule books where he is only mentioned with his avatar spell and their own gloriuos image of him or for something else? Seriously I don't get it ;)
This is not ment as an offense for Karsus fans, I'm just curious :)

Cus he so seeexy...
EDIT: *ahem*
Anyway...
I think it's largely because most people know him as the 'Best Mage EVAR' and that he ate the goddess of magic, got horrible indigestion and nearly blew up the planet after briefly becoming a god himself. There's plenty of awesome to be extrapolated from that, and further details of his existence probably aren't that well known beyond the very well read. |

Some are attracted to power.
He did something that cause the goddess of Magic limit the power of the Weave.
He did cause a RSE. |

How can one not worship the single greatest spellcaster in history, who created the ultimate spell that stole the divine power of the goddess of magic herself? That puts him above and beyond any deity even. He is the great and almighty KARSUS for crying out loud!! Bow down before his might. He WILL return to rule the new Ntheril, and in time, all the realms!!! Mwahahahaha!!!! |

If MarkusTay was still around he would be quick to remind us that Karsus in a TSR Shoehorn. How Karsus was originally not in the Realms, yadda, yadda, yadda. He used to bust LK's bubble on the WotC Boards with it. |

It probably has to do with his connection to Netheril, and the whole Shade/Shadow dynamic. We know that's popular! |

You're not the only one, Wooly... I find Karsus himself just as mystifying as his popularity, however. He clearly flunked out of divination in wizard school...
The aspects of Karsus that really interest me are all found in the entry on Karse in FR5, The Savage Frontier. The product is also an interesting one; Paul Jaquays is the credited author, but most of the material is from Ed's original notes on the North that didn't make it into FR1 due to the vast detail on Waterdeep that required the tiny typeface in and of itself. Mind you, a fair amount of the material in FR3, Empires of the Sands, and FR6, Dreams of the Red Wizards, was probably Ed's originally as well, and he's not credited as a primary author of either one. I guess it depends on how much was changed in the South and Thay from Ed's original Realms. |
Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.
If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic. |

I agree... Karsus had been the very representation of the greatness of Netheril. |

Karsus represents many elements of life in Netheril... Few of those elements were positive. |

Which is an interesting consideration. After all, while many may, ultimately, see Karsus as "the very representation of the greatness of Netheril," they should also remember, too, that this apparent greatness, eventually, led to his greatest failing -- and all as the so-called representative of the greatness of Netheril.

I think the real accomplishment here is that one of the spell components for the Karsus Avatar spell was the "epidermis of the pituitary gland of a tarrasque", From what I understand, if you can kill a tarrasque your already a deity. |

I suppose there is something inherently impressive about a guy who makes a grab for ultimate cosmic power and then fails, wiping out his entire civilization, changing the world forever and writing his name in the history books in giant flaming letters. On the down side, being a morality tale kind of sucks, but hey, is that too much a price to pay for immortality?
Probably... |
