The enigmatically entitled Lurkers in Shadow are the suggested present holders of the Wand of Orcus. Can anyone shed some light (no pun intended) on the details/motivations of the Lurkers and their key membership? My hope is to integrate them into a pbp campaign I'm hoping to start in the not-too-distant.

Many thanks in advance.

Where are they mentioned? It is possible that they were put there purely as a DM imagination prompt, especially as, AFAIK, Orcus doesn't figure all that heavily in Realmslore.

If nothing else, they're likely to be a cabal of liches and other powerful undead who've formed a cult around the thing, with a real badass weilding the wand itself and running the show. Not exactly the most original idea, of course, but I'm sure it won't take long for us all here to come up with something awesome.

I should elaborate on my statement a little. The reference is taken from the Forgotten Realms Wiki page, the same page that makes mention of the Lurkers' ties with the last vestige of Orcus's adopted guise as Tenebrous. I would have liked to include them in my Damara campaign as an unidentified menace hovering spectrally in the background, but the info's sparse.

Indeed, I don't even know if they're Realms natives or from another plane entirely!

Yeah, it doesn't really go into any detail, does it. If they were Realms specific, I'd imagine as much would have been stated in the wiki or mentioned by one of our resident sages. Basically, what this means is that you have free reign to spew forth whatever madness and horrors you fancy at h the PCs >:)

Appart from a liches cabal, the idea of a group of renegade shades popped into my head. Other posibilities include a group of demons with a habit of possessing people and some kind of assassin death cult. demon posessed shade assassins who are liches? and possibly also pirates?

I just had a thought regarding this, inspired by Cleric Generic's last comment... Orcus was defeated at the end of the Bloodstone saga (modules H1-H4, the first of which was not officially set in the Realms as published), and this is his only significant role in published Realmslore that I am aware of. What if the Lurkers in Shadow are (as CG suggests) a group of renegade shades who have attached themselves to Tenebrous (whose present existence as a vestige is apparently independent of the resurrected Orcus, about whom I can find next to nothing), and an allied group of renegade sarrukh liches independent from those already referenced in canon Realmslore linked with the Terraseer and the rise and fall of Netheril?

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

A 'working group' of rogue shade warlocks and Sarrukh liches based around an artefact of ultimate death and carnage sounds like and excellent way to ruin the party's day! Orcus could also be using this lot, with the wand and their link to Tenebrous and Shade, to recollect some of his former mojo. Some kind of conflict between the mainstream shades and the Lurkers might be fun... Especially if they get a hold of an enclave of their own...

Oh great... Not only do my poor £%^& PCs have to deal with Gargauth and Friends, but they're liable to get done by this lot as well... >:)

Apologies for losing track of this scroll...

Glad you liked my thoughts, CG... I think I'll be developing them for my own campaign as well...

I have a few other ideas in the works, inspired most recently by recent cryptic responses from Ed in his Questions 2010 scroll. I'm still not at all sure how everything will fit together, but we'll see what happens...
