Dear Ed and THO,
A Shadowdale just-pre-Spellplague question (in peacetime, assuming all the upheavals of the 3.5e hardcover "Tearing of the Weave" haven't happened yet, or never happened, or things have really settled down again, in the wake of)...
So it's late and I'm "taking out the garbage."
Do I: burn it? bury it? Throw it out into the woods to be scavenged? Throw it somewhere else, ditto?
And who am "I," usually? Husband? Wife? Child? Servant? Aging parent/grandparent/uncle/aunt living with younger kin? Rag-n-bone man for the community?
Thanks!
This isn't just "ooh, must get more detail" curiosity, I'm trying to work out details of a subplot involving how some small item could get inadvertently thrown out (or smuggled out) of a watched house...

Prologue, and Chapters 1, and 2.

It also has a Steel Regent's Ghost in it.

And Storm Silverhand.

BTW, the "acre" is a term still slowly creeping into the Realms, thanks to Elminster ("hectare" is still unknown), and most properties in Cormyr would officially be measured in "chains" or "chainsquares" (the surveyor's chain being a linear measurement, and the "chainsquare" being a square area measurement consisting of one chain per side; chains rather than rigid "ruler"-like measures are used so as to be able to handle irregular shapes).

So is there a standard or accepted length for chains?

And does the Crown back or regulate any particular units of measure? If not, is there anyone who does?

And since we're talking about land... I used to shuffle papers for a mortgage company. I saw some plat descriptions that were nicely vague, like "the land as described on page XX of platbook YY", or "XXXX square feet, measured from here to here to here". I saw other plat descriptions that were super detailed -- "starting at coordinates XX.XX degrees YY.YY minutes longitude, AA.AA degrees BB.BB minutes latitude, running QQ.QQ feet along the heading of TT, then turning 38.13 degrees to this other heading" and so on.

So how are angles measured? And how vague or descriptive are land records?

And my own searching through my extensive archives revealed only a few quick points on Gondegal's past.

I'm thinking it might have been something that popped up on the FR Mailing List. As such, I've have to hook up my old zip drive.

I'll keep looking.

I have noticed "bowshot" being used a LOT to describe distance, so can Ed add any more to Broken Helm's recollections? I must admit, this question is also backed by my 'Realmspeak' questing, thus a simple "Aye, he has the right of it" would also do (and prevent me from having as source "(Ed at GenCon 2009)" when that would be hearsay I think ).

Also, while I'm confirming stuff, consider the following two quotes as questions:

One Ed term for cannon fodder I recall from long ago is "gorcraw feed."
Meaning, I thinking, soon-to-be-carrion vultures or buzzards or the equivalent would feed on.

Hello. I found another Ed term for cannon fodder, for Zandilar's recent question. It's in my notes from a Realms adventure he ran for charity at Worldcon (the world science fiction convention held a few years back in Toronto), wherein he had the head of a noble house of Waterdeep refer to mercenary warriors he was sending to certain death, just to slow down mercenaries hired by a rival, as "graveyawn."
Presumably derived from the "grave yawns for them," or something of the sort.

Are "gorcraw feed" and "graveyawn" terms for cannon fodder as recalled by those scribes?

Hi again, all.
Kyrene, Ed sent me this reply to you:

Aye, he has the right of it. :}
As in: Broken Helm, Baleful Avatar, and Sage of Stars are ALL correct, so that's three "hes" and three citations for your Realmspeak compilation. I will add some measurements, when I get the chance; things in my life are MORE than hectic right now.

So saith Ed. Who is lore-writing diligently for us all, whenever he can snatch the time to do so.

If I were you, I'd jaunt on over to his thread and ask him. NDAs will probably prevent him giving you a direct answer about the Srinshee's precise powers, but he can certainly tell you why he says anything at all about character powers, and how he shapes what he does say.

Since I make a listening to what our Lady says, and trying to emulate her (look where it's gotten her!), I'll ask the question: Ed, why do you say anything at all about chacter powers, how do you shpae what you say, and what are you hinting at when you speak of The Srinshee's power?

And behold, a reply from Ed:

Hi, Menelvagor. The reason I say anything at all about character powers is to help DMs (and fiction readers) gain a general understanding of "who's stronger than whom," not usually for "who'd win a fight?" purposes but to understand deterrent and countervailing powers, character confidence and overconfidence, and so on. (Larloch is an already-referenced example of this.)
I shape what I say carefully, so as to almost always avoid absolutes ("the best," "the smartest") and leave "wiggle room" for later storytellers and DMs. That's only fair.
And as for the Srinshee, I can't tell you what I'm hinting at. Other than to remind you of the hints. ;} NDAs, you know.

So saith Ed. Tireless hint-meister of the Realms...

I can't wait for Elminster must die!

WotC is evil for those sample chapters in Circle of Skulls.

I really want to ask Ed a question about some Ghosts El is pondering over in chapter one. I know I need to wait for the book to see what more it has to say about them.(I really need a panic smilie right now!)

Well met once again, Ed and milady THO!

I have one more question... a subset of a question I had asked some time ago; I'm hoping that the narrowing of the focus of the question will perhaps speed the arrival of the answer. I'm assisting in locating ancient sites for scribe HandsomeRob's Toril map project, and we can't seem to find four mythal sites.

Edit: If any other scribes have any lore on the locations of these mythals that I have missed, please let me know in this scroll so we can save Ed the time. [/edit]

1) I know that Myth Unnohyr is in the Forest of Mir, but not exactly where in said forest, and I know that it was described briefly on page 54 of the Tethyr book of the 2E boxed set Lands of Intrigue (and nowhere else that I can find). I also know from search results with Google that something was done with it in the Neverwinter Nights computer game, so I'm wondering if that has perhaps loosened any extant NDAs on the precise location of the mythal.

2) I know that Myth Ondath (Ondathel, Yrlaancel) was built in Rystall Wood, which I believe was at least partially consumed by Anauroch, and I know that the mythal itself has been given a relatively precise location in the past, but I can't find that lore now. Perhaps another scribe can assist us in this detail?

3) I know from the REALMS-L postings from Eric Boyd and Steven Schend regarding mythals that Myth Adofaer/Adofhaor was in the High Forest, but has been removed to a future time (something to do with the fey'ri of House Dlardrageth and other tainted gold elves of Siluvanede); I'm expecting NDAs on this one to be iron-clad.

4) From the same REALMS-L postings, I know that Myth Iliscar (sp?) is on Lantan; I seem to remember something about it being a flying mythal city, and that Lantan was where it crashed, not where it was built. If you can confirm or deny this, and hopefully give us a more precise location of its ruins, it would be greatly appreciated.

Many, many thanks to both of you for everything, Ed and THO.

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

Ohhh, Jakk, you DO love charging right at NDAs in set-teeth challenges, don't you?
What a man . . .
Ahem. We'll see what this latest attempt yields...
Brimstone, Ed has sent me a reply of sorts to you, which is going to have to be a hint/tease for everyone else regarding ELMINSTER MUST DIE!:

I wouldn't be entirely astonished if someone who read to the end of ELMINSTER MUST DIE! learned a little more about those XXXXXs Elminster is, as you put it, "pondering over" in Chapter 1. Though I must add that there's a LOT more going on in the book than just that particular concern.

So saith Ed. Treading carefully, as usual . . .

Thanks THO..

Cause if El does what he is pondering to them, then the Realms better beware. The full fury of The Simbul would be a frightening sight to behold.

Hello ED and THO...

I was wondering about a theme that exists in almost any fantasy realm/world, and that it a Fountain of Youth, but I have never heard or read about anything similar in Faerūn? So does said fountain exist and if yes, then where?

I believe it's referred to as Potion of Longevity and most of the prideful nobles across Faerūn has probably had a sip or two from it

Hello! I was wondering if in the Realms, there are rare colors of mithril and other metals like gold. I have a character that has a mithril shirt made of gold mithril, and was curious if this would exist in the Realms (and where, please), or if it would have to be found elsewhere on the planes. And where would a person find rose gold, white gold, etc? Have coins ever been made out of these different colors of gold by any kingdom? Thank you for your time.

I know the Zentish "glory" (or "weeping wolf"; Power of Faerūn by Ed Greenwood, Eric L. Boyd) is made from a slightly reddish gold, but I'll allow Ed to add more...

Malcolm, I remember an early Milwaukee GenCon Ed-as-DM Realms charity game set in Shadowdale, where some minor NPCs were "out back" burning trash. If PCs were alert enough to notice WHAT they were burning, it went a long way toward the PCs solving the central mystery of the adventure.
Which () Ican't remember. I didn't play in the game, I just got to "sit in" and observe, which Ed allowed (for one thing, when players had to leave due to other events, real-life commitments or even just to go to the bathroom, an observer sometimes got to take over their character, even for just a few minutes).
So at least SOME folk of Shadowdale burn garbage.

Yes! Kyrene gets it! Kyrene, if we ever meet in person, I shall have to buy you a beverage of your choice.

I have a rather Spartan (as in, Leonidas) mind-set when it comes to choosing my battles... I'll take the challenge over the easy win any day, which is probably the biggest reason I've stopped complaining about the Spellplague. Complaining is easy; reverse-engineering and assembling an alternate path is the far greater challenge, and I'm having a great deal of fun with it.

Oh, and while I'm touching on the post-Spellplague Realms in Ed's scroll: Ed, if I haven't said it before, Laerakond is brilliant! Inserting it into my otherwise-unplagued Torilian geography was probably the easiest decision I've made in my whole rebuilding of my Realms, particularly with the excellent advice from yourself and Markustay on doing so.

One more thing that popped up in musings regarding Mystryl's Chosen... I know they're still officially untouched, but a scroll regarding the Srinshee elsewhere on the site made me wonder why I hadn't included her along with Larloch, Ioulaum, and Halaster in my original list... my speculation is that she stayed more sane than those three as a result of being a Chosen of the Seldarine as well as of Mystryl... my question is another simple yes-or-no query, as I've found I have the best luck with them :

Are there more than four of Mystryl's former Chosen surviving in the Realms as of 1373DR?

Yes, another windmill to tilt at... onward, Rocinante!

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

Sorry, nope. It's not something I use all that much, so I've gotten out of the habit of automatically installing it. I think the last time I installed it was three or four years ago, to help someone else who had an issue installing it.

I'd dust off my copy in order to check, but the FRIA doesn't usually play all that well with SageOS.

You could use some of the 2e printed maps of the region though. As I recall, one or two had a legend with an accurate enough map-scale.

Thank you for your time.

colored gold is usually made by combining the gold with other metals

These are some notes i've collected on that subject actually for my d&d game:

Color of gold

Mainly, Gold appears to be metallic yellow. Gold leaf can be beaten thin enough to become translucent. The transmitted light appears greenish blue, because gold strongly reflects yellow and red. Gold readily creates alloys with many other metals. These alloys can be produced to increase the hardness or to create exotic colors (see below).

Because of the softness of pure (24k) gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. Alloys with lower caratage, typically 22k, 18k, 14k or 10k, contain higher percentages of copper, or other base metals or silver or palladium in the alloy.

Copper is the most commonly used base metal, yielding a redder color.

Eighteen carat gold containing 25% copper has a distinct, though not dominant, copper cast, creating rose gold.

Fourteen carat gold-copper alloy is nearly identical in color to certain bronze alloys.

Blue gold can be made by alloying with iron. Blue gold is more brittle and therefore more difficult to work with when making jewelry.

purple gold can be made by alloying with aluminium, although rarely done except in specialized jewelry.

Fourteen and eighteen carat gold alloys with silver alone appear greenish-yellow and are referred to as green gold.

White gold alloys can be made with palladium or nickel.

White 18 carat gold containing 17.3% nickel, 5.5% zinc and 2.2% copper is silver in appearance. Alternative white gold alloys are available based on palladium, silver and other white metals), but the palladium alloys are more expensive than those using nickel. High-carat white gold alloys are far more resistant to corrosion than are either pure silver or sterling silver.

The Japanese craft of Mokume-gane exploits the color contrasts between laminated colored gold alloys to produce decorative wood-grain effects.

I was wondering about a theme that exists in almost any fantasy realm/world, and that it a Fountain of Youth, but I have never heard or read about anything similar in Faerūn? So does said fountain exist and if yes, then where?

There is a legend of a "fountain of youth" mentioned in the Lands of Intrigue book rumored to be in the Forest of Mir.

The Wellspring Endless: Legends tell of a crystal-blue spring that surfaces amid a ring of white stones, and this is the Wellspring Endless. To drink from the pool is to live forever, regain one's youth, or forever relive nightmares while your body remains in a stupor. The pool remains undiscovered.
