To inform you all I would like to have some ideas for a new web page that I am thinking about starting. This web page is going to be made for D&D players who want to speak their minds against people who seem to think that D&D is nothing more then Devil worship and other such things. Placing a label upon something that is nothing more then a game, is rather rude and, well just plain out right ignorant. I for one know for a fact that many people do not have a problem with the D&D style games, it seems to be people who think they have to be nothing less then "messengers of god', people who think what they believe is what god wants the world to be like, in other words people who think they are better then everyone else.
I for one am getting sick of such sights like the one Mournblade listed. I do find them funny that people waste their time trying to press their own belifes on other, even though they wouldnt want someone else doing the same to them.
What I want most of all from everyone is ideas for this sight, maybe one or two partners who would also like to work upon the site, and your own words.
After all shouldnt we be allowed to speak for our slves against others who seem to deem what we do wrong? Who evenb though they probably never will, shut down such thing that we enjoy? I think we should. Just to press our own ideas and let them be known. Who knows maybe we can even get quite a few of the people who think this way to see were we come from.

Excellent idea, Cult Leader. Though perhaps that that screen name might be a bit . . . off of what we'd be trying to portray.
I'll certainly offer my paper to be posted there, once I'm done with it. I'll be trying to get some certain religious experts to give me their opinions. I've got a contact that can put me in touch with the head of the Vatican's office on cults and the like. I'm hoping he might have a few words, in an official capacity. And there's another outspoken Catholic my mother knows of that likes fantasy a lot; I'm going to see if he's ever written anything on D&D.
Right now, though, I think all I can help with is to point out (as I think you must have figured out, but I have to say it just in case) that this site needs to be calm, logical, polite, and far from 'dark' in tone. Many of us prefer the flaming-torches-and-skulls animated GIFs and the like, but that should be avoided in this case. Light, mellow colors. We aren't hiding anything.
Let's also avoid the too-easy trap of saying some thing like "That's not true, this is." Even if it actually is like that, no one likes to listen to something that sounds like a counter-accusation. "I didn't do it, Johnny did it!"
Instead, the main part of the sight will be like a news source, or how the news is supposed to be -- namely, unbiased. Have sections where people like us can submit editorials; that is, opinions. That's where we can put the more emotional things. (And where, I think, I'd have to confine my own postings. I can be calm, collected, and logical, but I can't seem to help but state my own opinions on things.)
We'll also need to investigate the violence and suicides that are aledgedly linked to D&D. I finally found some specific references, but I thought they sounded far too superficial.
All in all, this should have four sections:
Defending D&D in a religious sense (i.e., it's not Wicca or demon-summoning, and it isn't one of the evils listed in the Book of Revelations).
Defending D&D in a psychological and sociological sense (i.e., it isn't a game just for outcasts, and won't drive people to muder and suicide).
Introducing new gamers to the ideas of D&D, and especially third edition. (I think I ought to have some things to say on that, since I came into it so recently.)
And finally, a place where long-time gamers can interact. No need for a forum, just a here-are-some-ideas-from-my-D&D-game section, news on public events, Wizards news, the like.
Of course, that's all a lot of work. I'm not suggesting it all at once! Just that this should be a rough outline that you/we grow into.
Hope that helps . . . . |

Well, the primary focus will be on the first three things I mentioned. There are already lots of gaming sites out there (such as our own humble haunt ); what we need more than that is a site showing that there is really no problem with our hobby.
I wish I knew what closed-minded moron started this anti-D&D thing, but that's water under the bridge. (And many miles downstream, by now.)
Just remember. If they're trying so hard to make us look bad, that often means we're doing something right. After all, if we were that bad, it would be showing a lot more than the few instances they can cook up. I think that most of them are trying too hard. (Which is the reason I'd want this so-far hypothetical site to be very calm, ordered, and collected. Show them they're wrong, and show the whole world by letting everyone know that D&D doesn't make someone a Satanist, any more than Monopoly makes someone aspire to be a CEO.) |
