So I'm not for thinkin any oh yer selves are asksin to be knowin what I was for thinkin but I'm to be tellin ya all the same. =)
The main point of this scroll is for me to express my opinion, that outside of fanfiction I have never seen any one write Dwarves so well as R.A. Salvatore. I don't personally think non elven and human races get the attention they deserve. There always supporting cast and side kicks never main characters. But that little rant aside for the ones we do get to see I enjoy R.A.'s Dwarves the most. I enjoyed Richards Bakers Halfling in the recent novel SWORDMAGE very very much. There was also a pretty cool little Spriggan in realms of war.
I guess my questions are as follows.
Who do you feel writes nonhuman races the best in your realms experience.
What races would you like to see get more attention?

Elaine Cunningham and Ed Greenwood. Special mention for Lisa Smedman, who populated the "House of Serpents" trilogy with some of the best portrayals of Scaly Folk I've seen anywhere.
Re: which races I'd like to see receive more attention -- without a doubt, it'd have to be the Long Forgotten Folk of the Realms. The gnomes. They're my favourite race, and aside from a few brief appearances here and there, I've yet to enjoy a full and lengthy Realms tale about them. |

| Elaine has used a few dwarves in her books -- Jill, Ebenezer, and Morgala the Mirthful. I liked the way she handled them. |

Aye, I must say that I've always very much liked Salvatore's dwarves as well. I'll second Ed, as he does elves very well (Elminster in Myth Drannor being a prime example of this), but other than those two my experiences with authors writing about non-humans are quite limited.
Now this may be simply due to more exposure to Dragonlance than the Realms, but it's always seemed to me that Dragonlance has used more non-humans in more exciting ways than the Realms has. Like I said, I could well be wrong there, though. |

Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be...

Not really. The DL novels have long been the focus of characters who aren't, always, necessarily human.
As an example, I offer Jean Rabe's "The Stonetellers" for DRAGONLANCE. It's actually quite an interesting premise for a Krynnish-based tale. Essentially, we've been introduced to the concept of 'stonetelling' -- which is, basically, a kind of geological-telepathy, which involves physically/mentally making contact with rocks, stones, and the "living"earth, and ascertaining things like directions, locations of mineral deposits, and geological activity.
Additionally, the main characters of the trilogy are an assortment of goblins and hobgoblins. Which is intriguing all by itself, since I can't ever recall reading any fantasy books that offers the reader an opportunity to view the world through the eyes of the various goblinoid races. I've actually grown quite sympathetic to their plight on both Krynn, and worlds elsewhere.
A worthwhile read for any DL-fan, goblin-fan, or just a fantasy-fan whose tired of the usual mixed tales of elves, men, and dwarves. |

| The Twilight Giants series by Troy Denning is one of my favorite as well. Not that Heartsvalse even exist in 4E but any way I digress. I very much enjoyed the Gnomish chapter in blackstaff just wish it was longer. |
