It seems that DDO is going to become free to play and there's a rumor that there might be a Neverwinter Nights MMO coming in 2011.

http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/06/ataris-secret-weapon-neverwinter-nights.html

Edit: Oops, meant to put this in the computer section. Can someone move it? Sigh, don't post when half awake. And I see Ashe also heard about DDO becoming free. :) She/he did post it first but in another thread.

Mod Edit: Shifted to a more appropriate shelf.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Okay, going to nip this in the bud. My avatar's male because I'm male... I chose the name Ashe after my favorite character (half-elf ranger from 2nd edition circa 1997) who's named after a certain shotgun-wielding-chainsaw-for-a-hand Sam Raimi creation.

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Heh, I like the "Still Online" in the title.

This, however...
quote:
Unsurprisingly, the free to play client will be funded by micropayment extras – “hundreds of convenience items as well as premium dungeon packs, additional character slots, hirelings (hired muscle), potions, character customization and more”, apparently. We’ll find out this summer whether these are strictly optional thrills, or are essential to truly enjoying the game – always a risk with this business model.

That to me takes away a lot of the positive impact of the word "free". Free-but-not-really-free isn't the same as free.

well atleast it sounds like you can still play, just the free stuff trickles off as you level, and just don't plan on doing PvP.

Plus its also only available in the US...

Thanks for the news, Kuje.

NWN likely to become an MMO, hmmm. I'm not surprised that's a route they'd choose to take, although as I've said before that style of play currently holds no appeal for me.

"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams."

Lawsuits... another reason I'm glad I don't play (most) computer games any more.

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

And now, Turbine has been bought out by Warner Bros.
