Do Shades have to eat? I'm thinking they use Anne Rice vampire rules - they can eat normal food, but don't have to...

...and I don't think I like that. They're tough enough without being immune to hunger.

My latest Realms-based short story, about a bard, a paladin of Lathander and the letter of the law, Debts Repaid. It takes place before the "shattering" and gives the bard Arion a last gasp before he plunges into the present.http://candlekeep.com/campaign/logs/log-debts.htm

I think Artemis Antreri still had to eat, but he is a half-Shade (or some-such), so I'm not sure if that even helps.

Erevis Cale eats and also has some Shade-like tendencies, but once again thats not really an answer.

Edit: Found it!!!

Monsterous Compendium Annual #4 (2e) has a Shade entry (pg. 68) -
quote:
Shades eat much the same diet as they did while morlal, but
apparently receive some nourishment from shadow itself; no
accounts exist of any of captive shades (for what little time they
were captured) starving or becoming malnourished for lack of
food and water.

some 4E realmslore for shade p.260 FRCG

Shades
BECOMING A SHADE IS SEEN AS A GREAT REWARD for service to the empire. The most powerful Netherese are usually shades. A shade retains its original appearance, but with a gaunt, drawn look. Its skin takes on a dull hue, and its eyes become slightly luminous. It no longer needs to eat or sleep, and its aging slows to a crawl. As a shade grows older, its appearance becomes darker and more monstrous, with strange features such as sharp teeth.

I had assumed from that bit I found earlier that Shades bo not need to eat, but do so out of habit, and that last piece of lore confirms it.

Good find.

I'm thinking now that perhaps 'food' functions in the same way for Shades as animal blood does for vampires - they can live off it, but but it is not what they prefer. Like a starving vampire who drinks animal blood, a Shade can resort to human food to keep itself alive if no shadows are avaialble (probably in a weakened state).

Of course, aside the middle of a bright desert, I can't think of any place that doesn't have some shadows.
