IMC, I have placed an Eskimo culture on the far eastern part of the main continent, northeast of Kara-Tur. If one examines the FR Atlas CD map, there are 3 areas of tundra/grassland notheast of Kara-Tur. The very large tundra/grassland area is the realm of the Northmen (a Viking inspired culture). The small, middle tundra/grassland area is the peaceful trading realm used by both the Northmen and the Eskimos to conduct business in. Finally, the farthest eastern tundra/grassland area is home to the Eskimos, a realm based on a mixing of the Yupik and Inuit cultures from Earth. I came up with this design after reading the AD&D Kara-Tur boxed set. IMC, these Vikings seem to enjoy raiding the Eastern areas of the Kara-Tur for food, riches and other items of value.... They also bring back items to use as trade goods for the Eskimo items they value. For some reason, they do not conduct raids on the Eskimos; instead they remain at peace with them and share in the governing of the trading town area. I guess the Eskimos are not ones to mess with...
It seems there are alot of areas on Toril that are open to creative design....

There is an already existing Eskimo-like culture in FR, in Pelvuria (the Great Glacier), called the Ulutiuns.
That glacier extends quite a ways north, and evidence of that culture exists in the areas you have pointed out as well - in fact, the existing culture in Pelvuria seems to have been the 'lost tribe' of Issacortae, or at least thats the idea I get when I read certain entries in the GHotR.
I really need to create an arctic-projection map for Toril.
And yes, there are many, MANY un-developed regions on Toril... and thats all I'm going to sat about that.  |

Not wanting to sound picky, but they are called Innuit, since Eskimo - while established - is quite derisory a name for this people. So rather start the "correct" name straight away and use it from here on.
Eskimo 1584, from Dan. Eskimo or M.Fr. Esquimaux (pl.), both probably from an Algonquian word, such as Abenaki askimo (pl. askimoak), Ojibwa ashkimeq, lit. "eaters of raw meat," from Proto-Algonquian *ask- "raw" + *-imo "eat." The Eskimo people's word for themselves is Innuit "men." |
