I have a PC in my game that is a Half-Ogre with Monkey Grip, and he is currently using oversized reach weapons.
Now a large creature has reach of 10ft, and with a Reach weapon 20ft, but can only hit squares 15ft or 20ft away.
If the Reach weapon is oversized does it then gain the reach of a huge weapon, ie +15ft, which is then added to the base reach. So meaning he can only hit squares 20ft or 25ft away?
If he then uses an oversized spiked chain can he then threaten any up to 25ft away, giving a total area of a square with 12 squares or 60ft on each side.
I am right in thinking that if he attacks rank and file 1st level warriors and has great cleave and a reasonable strength could he actually kill the 60 warriors in his forward threat area. With another 16 using a 5ft step?

I would assume that a standard reach weapon for a Large creature would only extend *his* reach by an extra 10 feet, since the weapon doubles the normal reach of a Large creature (which is 10'). So his reach should be 15', but he cannot attack anything that is within 10', since the reach weapon cannot attack the adjacent squares it was designed for. His attack area should look like this (Y he can hit, N he can't):
-...Y... -..Y.Y.. -.Y...Y. -Y..O..Y -.Y...Y. -..Y.Y.. -...Y...
The exception would be for whips and spiked chains, which can attack creatures within the adjacent squares:
-...Y... -..YYY.. -.YYYYY. -YYYOYYY -.YYYYY. -..YYY.. -...Y...
Edit: Overextended the area, now corrected. |
I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

In the players handbook it states that a reach weapon doubles the wielders natural reach, so a large creatures reach goes from 5ft or 10ft to 15 or 20ft. Since the natural reach of a huge creature is 15ft then surely a huge reach weapon confers a bonus equal to double this, hence +15ft on you base reach.
Is this not so? |

Ah, sorry, I was basing it off of the character being Medium-sized with the Monkey Grip feat. If he's Large sized with the Monkey Grip, then yes, it's out to +15 feet, so his reach would be 25, with the same addition as above, that he threatens the squares out at 25', but not within the 25' border:
-.....Y..... -....Y.Y.... -...Y...Y... -..Y.....Y.. -.Y.......Y. -Y....O....Y -.Y.......Y. -..Y.....Y.. -...Y...Y... -....Y.Y.... -.....Y.....

I cant help but picture the introduction to the Lord of the Rings where Sauron swings his big sword and wipes out rows of poor elves.

Yeah, but a) he was a deity, and b) that was the video game version of the story.
If the PC takes Craft Ring, look out.

-I would rather use a powerful build race and not suffer a -2 penalty to attack roll. Thats the 3.5 Optimizer in me. Monkey Grip is a trap feat. But thats just me.

Since Half-Ogre is a Large race, it's pretty much equivalent to the Powerful Build races in that they both can wield Large weapons and take the Monkey Grip feat for Huge weapons. |

Now if there was a large race with powerful build ability that would be something to see
