Spells stilled fellow scribes,
I've confirmed that there are in fact two trade routes called "The Long Road". One is of course, the overland trade route from Waterdeep up to Mirabar in the Silver Marches. The other is a dwarven trade root that connects to the village of Glen, Mistledale, and runs through the Underdark's Deep Wastes (and presumably the Glimmersea) to the Great Rift. However, except for listing the name in Volo's Guide to the Dalelands and the 3E Campaign Setting, I can't seem to find any other references that list it. Not the 3.5 Underdark book, nor the 2E Dwarves Deep. Does anyone have any more information on whither this subterranean Long Road runs and what goods and (dwarven) folk travel it?

Damm, that's a long road |
If I waited till I knew what I was doing, I'd never get anything done.

There are at least two other Long Roads: the Zhentarim's Long Road to Riches, and the road running from Nathoud to Rashemen and perhaps also towards Narfell.
The subterranean Long Road has a derivative mention in Demihumans of the Realms, but that's all I can think of. |

I believe Ed posted (via me) about the Long Road here at the Keep, in the early years of the Questions for Eddie thread (in response to a question about Glen). Sage? wooly? Kuje? Is my memory failing me, or . . .? love, THO |

Not sure.... hmmm. I did a search for Glen in my index's and road and didn't come up with either. Richard Baker discussed Glen though once and I found a reply from Ed about the Low Road.... but nothing for Long Road or Glen. Unless I wrote it up as something different. |

Indeed.
I didn't come up with anything during my own search... just Ed's replies about the "Low Road." There were references to "Long Road" -- but they had to do with Ed's "Long Road Home" story.
And I didn't find anything in my other archives either. |

I know the response THO is speaking about, but darned if I know where it is right now. The jist of it was that the "Long Road" wasn't an actual road like you'd see on the surface, but rather a series of linked caverns and Hidden strongholds, and that only specific dwarven caravan masters knew all of the remote trails and tunnels that would lead the way from Glen all the way to the Great Rfit. The dwarves over the centuries had done some improvements, but it wasn't even remotely close to the "straight shot, floors and walls straight as rulers, carved from stone" road that many people might have assumed.
There was more, but I don't remember it right now. I'll poke around and see if I can come up with the actual post, but there's something to get you started.
edit: Found it. It's from May 9, 2004, and in a response about Glen's dragon egg trade (which is why I remembered it; I was rereading about that trade a few months ago). Ed calls it the "Low Road," but traces its route from Glen to the Great Rift, so it's clearly the same route. I guess it's just called different things by different people. Considering how paranoid dwarves can be, I find this entirely reasonable, but it explains why we were having trouble finding it.
I don't know how to link to a specific post, but here's the link to the particular page:

It's about halfway down. Just do a search for Glen or Fell's Axe and you'll go right to it.
Hope this helps. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

I seem to recall something in the CK Compendium about this (at least the dwarves in Mistledale). Am I remembering something that wasn't there? |

Ah, cool beans. Then both Sage and I did find it but we thought it was something else due to it being called the Low Road. :) |

Thanks, Hoondatha! Ah, it's great to have such great Realms scholars and friends here at the Keep. [big warm fuzzy smile] I just hope we can go on giving you lots more to smile about, in the years ahead, here at the Keep (regardless of what edition the game is currently in, and the status of the Realms at the time). love, THO |

Aw, thanks THO. Glad to help.
Oh, and don't worry. Where you go, smiling people soon follow. Regardless of how much you're carrying (or not). |

Indeed. I should have fully read those replies instead of skimming them.

Spells stilled:
Instead of doing "long road" subjest searches, do searches on "Glen" or on "dragon eggs", or "glowhammers" as they all featured prominently in his answer.

I had in fact searched for all three, but hadn't yet sifted through all the Ed responses.

Exactly what I was looking for, sir. Much thanks. |
