Uhm, I am completely unaware of any method of farming that is more efficient AND more destructive. Did you mean more efficient methods of clearing land? Certainly chainsaws, bulldozers, and modern tractors are more efficient at changing habitat into farmland. But as farm as farming itself goes, the least efficient methods are the most destructive. You have to clear more land to provide the same amount of food. These methods typically do not protect the soil from depletion or erosion, and then after your topsoil is depleted or eroded you have to clear more land. |

As far as I'm concerned, with this custom idea I'm considering about humankind's early development, man's 'fall' from an innocent state of oneness with nature, and so foth... for me it would detract from the fun escapism of Realms to make human farming an ecologically harmful thing. FR is a world of magic and gods, and fantastic creatures. I wouldn't want anything to intefere with that sense of it. Where I was coming from was more that makind's faculty of intelligence was changed by the use of tools, farming, and creation of cities. Anyway, I would leave out real life concerns about clearcutting and erosion of topsoil and such. |

If the realms were mine, I would posit that Cyric's murder of Mystra, instead of causing the Supiciously Accurate In It's Destruction Of Places And People That Aren't "Cool" Enough Spellplague(TM), is foiled at the last minute by Leira throwing herself in front of his dagger, given Mystra time to react and throw Cyric out of the Dweomerheart.
You see, Cyric originally killed an illusion of Leira. The goddess had willingly given Cyric her divine power and lived as a quasi-deity. With the help of Savras, she saw what Cyric and Shar were going to attempt.
Well aware of the horrific consequences of what would have happened if Cyric had succeeded, an enraged Ao stripped Cyric of the portfolio of illusions and restores it Leira, who becomes a Lesser Goddess. Shar gets away with it because she knew the plan was never going to succeed, she just wanted to off Cyric. Leira, with the help of Mystra, imprison Cyric in a mad delusion of the Shattered Realms, where blue fire reshaped the world. The prayers of his followers and his view of the world don't match up, so he is stark raving mad.
Somewhere, in other Prime World, the Sage of Shadowdale picks up a "4th Edition Forgotten Realm's Campaign Guide" flips through it, and shudders. |

To be honest the title of the thread is misleading for this purpose IMO. Just to add something in the intended spirit:
In MY Realms ...
- Impiltur has now become the Forgotten Realms version of Jane Austen England. After having seen Sense and Sensibility (and this version works best as I have seen others too and they arent nearly as "emotional") I think of the male hero (Colonel Brandon) as a Paladin. He has kept faithful for his long lost love for years and this suffering fits perfectly with Ilmater, who is a major deity of the country. A rigid culture like the one depicted by Jane Austen works very well with a Paladin society to keep it believable. It is also a great opportunity for roleplaying, because an "everything goes" society does not offer many challenges, whereas a rigid and regulated one does challenge you to overcome these problems. One problem remains: How do adventurers fit into a "caste system", since they dont have an extensive property (usually), probably not the fine manners required for high society, but they could be powerful and wealthy enough to have sufficient prestige to be invited.
- Having seen quite a few Jane Austen movies recently I have noticed that the differences between the sexes arent usually expressed enough in a fantasy roleplaying game. It does make sense to have them though, because men are probably the stronger gender and women still get pregnant. Thus the traditional "men hunt and women stay at home" role distribution does make perfect sense. There are some more in depth reasons which would explain this, but I wont bother expanding this unnecessarily. "Political correctness" (equality of the sexes) may sound nice, but it is dead boring, because it doesnt leave much for roleplaying.
- If Impiltur is England then Damara could be Scotland, but I am still working on that ... the northern climate and somewhat rocky / hilly countryside would fit at least.
- I am also adapting several really old modules for the campaign and it all begins in Saltmarsh (the town which is described in a ridiculously overpowered version in the DMG II) with my much more detailed version of U1-The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh.

IMO it isnt, because the adventuring females could well be "non-standard", while the rest does conform to the "typical roles". This adds yet another degree of depth to roleplaying, because the "male-ish female" has to choose how to act in a society. Does she choose the "male role" and dress with trousers and adventuring gear or rather behave like a female with a pretty dress and smart conversation.
The "typical roles" have nothing to do with females being less powerful and IMO especially Jane Austen shows this. She has quite a lot of families that are ruled by "iron matrons" in her novels or at least rather powerful females. Personally I dont think our industrial societies are trying to make women equal to men in rights, but only in manners, behaviour and outward appearance. That isnt "real" equality of the sexes, but rather transforming one of them into another to give the appearance of equality (and losing one part of our culture in the process). True equality comes from mutual respect and you can respect and revere a woman even if she "only" cooks, raises children, keeps the household and does some knitting or so. In the same way you should treat a garbage cleaner with respect, because he does a job you might not want to do and he is necessary for you to have a good life.
"Sexism" also has nothing to do with roles and the way males / females behave. I usually think of it like this: If the princess is capable of defending herself there is no more need for the knight in shining armor to rescue her. Thats not something I would want in a fantasy roleplaying game (or in reality). |

Even as a female, I think that the female adventurer should be "non-standard." Though many women would love to have a life of adventure and go out killing orcs and bandits and whatnot, many of them simply won't do it and they shouldn't do it. This is not the place for social commentary so I'll stop there, but, wow, do I have a LOT to say on this subject !
It makes for really great and interesting adventures to see just what happens when people (women) get pushed too far. I think it also makes for great RP because not everything can be handled in a straight-up brawl, especially if you're not physically as capable as the next guy.
It should also make RP different for the "guys" traveling with the woman. If she's not as physical and not just as willing to die for her cause (or they don't want to see her die), then they've got to think about what's going to happen to her when they can't back down from that stupid bar fight or that small time bandit who just opened a "toll road."
I think it also makes you get more into the setting. If there's a place where women are pretty much thier husband's property, and unattached women are anyone's property, then you kind of have to think about that before you go marching into town as an "independent" women. And while she may be able to take care of herself for a while, just constantly being on guard all the time would wear ya down and it'd be stupid not to take another route to get what you came for and get out.
I think that adventuring women should definitely be "non-standard," and if the realms were mine, that's the way it would be. I'm in no way saying that women are not capable of adventuring. I'm saying that not ALL women are, just as not all men are cut out to be that white knight who rescues her.
I think the fact that it's not a standard thing makes it more interesting and realistic - Yes, I like my fantasy realistic .
In fact, my PC plays both sides. When she's out with the "guys" she's just one of the guys, but she doesn't put up with any nonsense and after a while they stop giving her nonsense. However, in the city, you'll often find her in a well-made dress, socializing with the best of 'em or playing with the children and fitting right in.
I don't think that women should be treated badly or treated as property in any way, however, I like that aspect in fantasy for RP. It makes you think "How do I deal with this?" and that just leads to all kinds of possibilities.

Just going to say, sometimes that knight in shining armor is not the a typical type of knight. I once played an orc that saved a woman from certain "unpleasentness" but she thought he just wanted "unspoiled goods" when he whisked her away. After he got her to the group she was a bit puzzled after yelling at the group to save her from the "filthy beast", which the group consisted of a dwarf, gnome, elf, and human aside from myself. They just all burst out in laughter at her and the dwarf finally mustered up enough composer to say, "Lass, that fella 'ere just saved ye life." She fainted at the very concept of an orc being her knight in shining armor.
Apparantly, there was a prophecy in some book in the world that she and her knight would fall in love and get married and bring peace to the land after years of torment, war, strife and famine. I had no clue about this until half way in and we had to protect her continously. She literally spat in his face, cursed him, called him all sorts of things that would make your ears turn red, but in the end she succumbed to his orcish charms.
She only warmed up to my character after he had literally held off a mob of kobalds, a hydra with tweleve heads (that shot fire mind you), a small band of five frost giants, three assassins (at the same time), lots of other orcs that weren't as nice as himself, and to top it off an evil necromancer that needed her for a dark prophecy sacrifice. After that, she finally started calling my character by his real name.
Needless to say the campaign had its comical moments. And she was able to protect herself as a sorceress, but she still needed my orc to take the majority of the lumps to survive.
The campaign was very similiar to Shrek that is true, but stories do have a mustard seed of truth to them. I only brought this up for I figured, "why not share this comedy to others?" and for the fact I think it proves while women can most assuredly defend themselves men will always have their place as guardian. It is genetically built in for women to be nuturers and men protectors/hunters. And yes I also agree with you, Pandora, and Brynweir, that women adventurers are uncommon. Just take a look at Cormyr for example with the Princess-Regeant and her sorceress friend as prime examples of fitting that concept.
Anyways, I've rambled on enough at this point and that's my two cents.

Clear studies, Scribes:
Cormyr and Cormanthor will sign a mutual defense policy against the Shade Empire and their new property of Sembia, creating a new power struggle in the Heartlands.
On one hand, there is the new Republic of Cormanthor with the participants being: Elves of Myth Drannor, Shadowdale, Daggerdale, Mistledale, Deepingdale, Battledale, Featherdale, Tassledale, and drow elves who repent of their crimes and take a god oath that they will obey the commands of the Coronal. (I have not read the Lady Pentinant series, but I know some Drow are redeemed and return to being dark elves and these are the elves I speak of.) Eilistraee is not killed and becomes the patrol of these new dark elves, with Vhaeraun promising no more aggression before the Seldarine and swearing fealty to her and serving as the dark elves war god after killing Selvetarm.
Another side will be Shades with their conquest of Sembia. The shades are now starting to be active in their plans to conquer the North. They are currently working of subtefuge in the Black Network to bring those land under their control. They are actively enchanting the leaders of the Tun Tribes to act as proxies and direct the efforts of the Tribes to attacks against Cormyr. They are courting the Cult of the Dragon to join them but are really just planning the right time to take over the leadership of all the local cells.
A third side will be the Zhentilar who have conquered all the Moonsea. Manshoon the True returns after the failure to take Shadowdale in the events of the Shadowdale modular and with the help of his clone (who he has found a way to control) and several clans of Fey'ri who escaped Myth Drannor, destroy the truly powerful among the Church of Bane (Fzoul escapes, swearing vengence against Manshoon). The church of Bane is forced in line with Manshoon's idea for them, the military will be cracked down on, and all the wizards and beholders in the Network once again swear fealty to Manshoon, due to the fact they are frightened of a tattoo on his forehead that suggests a pact with a great outer plane evil (the outsider Duke of Hell called the Resolver of Enchantments). Wizards are actively recruited with lucrative rewards to help Manshoon counter the threat of the magical superiority of the elves and the Shades.
Harrowdale will stay indepentant and play off the Shades, the Zhentilar, the Elves and the other nearby national powers against each other to enrich themselves and to try and stay independant.
The Storm King of the Thunder Pears attacks with an army and overruns Archendale and the High Dale, creating a temporary country of humanoids. With the help of the a red dragon that lives the Thunder Peaks just to the north of the Thunder Pass, crudely constructed seige engines, and tunnels constructed under the mountains to the humanoids clan lands, they close off the Thunder Gap with fortifications and charge enormous tolls to allow through the Gap. Cormyr is unable to clear it out due to their countering the Tun Raiders in the West and their concern over Shade-run Sembia to the East and fortifying all over the place after several costly wars.
Scarsdale Town is taken over by a unknown shadow figure who has thousands of soldiers loyal to him alone as his army. The town is quickly brought under a strict order, but reasonable negotiations are started with the rest of Scarsdale to join together the land under one rule.
A new empire in the Tortured Lands arises as a cabal of wizards ally with a large family of GRAY DRAGONS take over all the humanoid tribes of the Tortured Lands and the surrounding mountains and start a low-grade war with the Black Network.
The Eldath Veluthraa have built a new headquarters within the remaining underground ruins of Myth Ondathel and are starting to set up portals to other places in Faerun for a more centrilized governing style.
Thay is the same. They are just too good as they were in 3.x to change them, and they make a good foil to the Shade empire. Everybody but true haters use their services now. Thay gets a little less world dominating due to the power swings in the North and are now acting as Switzerland in WWII, much to the dislike of their rulers.
Alustriel concentrates on populating Myth Glaurach with humans, dwarves clans, and halfing families while many of the elven clans out of the High Forest led by Lady Morgwais, and gnomes out of the surrounding hills all come together with the purpose of populating Myth Glaurach and turning it into a defense point against the Shade Empire speading west. Several divisions of the millitary of the Silver Marches are sent to Myth Glaurach and act as the city army until a formal one is created.

I would change the Spellplague to be an event that would affect individual spellcasters as opposed to the Weave itself. The more powerful spells one casts give a greater chance of insanity (Wis dmg), and the more often you cast spells the greater the chance of insanity. Not cumulative past 24 hours.
I would sneak into WOTC and steal all the material that made it to the cutting room floor and all of Ed's maps, notes, and stories would be made available to the public.
The Srinshee returns with her retenue of High Mages and the Ruler's Tower and I would have one of our guest authors write a short story on the Claiming Ceremony of Isevele Miritar including several hidden High Mages, the High Fire Crown, all the Chosen (except Khelben, his deathwas absolutely perfect storywise and totally in line with 2nd Ed requirements for Elven High Magic),Queen Moonflowerand a High Magic Ritual that completly restores the City of Songs and the mythal. |

I would rewrite the Savage Frontier, beginning with Longsaddle, to make it more realistic. (I really can't stand the official version of Longsaddle. "'Tis a silly place.") The notion that any trade could pass up and down the Long Road, considering the roaming bands of monsters and the sparsity of civilization, is rather ludicrous. I would fill in those blank spots on the map with more villages, hamlets, and forts to create a corridor of civilization that would at least make trade between Waterdeep, Mirabar, and Silverymoon plausible, if still risky.

I have read that before, but not in a Realms product. I think it was from the Sage himself.
So then, if one asks what I would do with the Realms, I would fill in those blank spots and knock it off with the RSEs. |

Indeed, this is generally where I place the generic D&D modules (Sunless Citadel, Forge of Fury, Barrow of the Forgotten King, Lost Vault of Tsathzar Rho, etc.) at. So I do rather like the fact that it is a "blank spot" on the map. |

As for what I would add to the Realms. I am working on several adventures for my campaign ATM where I am detailing out several cities, complete with history and NPC's as well. I would add them into the Realms along with a few other items as well, including one mgical item from 2nd Ed. which I always thought was kind of weird but funny. |

That's me - good with the evil ideas. For some reason my old game group (I mean my college game group) had a problem with that .
And as for magical items, we've come up with one that I think is pretty cool (could wreak some great havoc) that I'd include in my realms, but I'm not sure I should detail it here.... I'll let ya know. |

The Magic item I was thinking of Wooly is Ardraken's Refreshment Simulacrum. The item is made to resemble a modern day pop vending machine. |

Which one? The wand of misplaced objects was a personal fave from 2E, for me, and I do think a couple of NPCs in the various Volo's Guides had one.
The Magic item I was thinking of Wooly is Ardraken's Refreshment Simulacrum. The item is made to resemble a modern day pop vending machine.
I can't say I recall that one, but it sounds like something from the old Book of Wondrous Inventions... |

The problem with most of the creations I can think of is that they would drastically change the Realms as they are now. Wizards need to be in towers to use much of their power, cultures, Evermeet as another world entered through gates, the Underdark as a jungle of strange landscapes, vegetation and creatures (easier used to explain monsters cropping up than the harsh and mainly desolate version used officially) separated pantheons, low magic, things taken from other sources and modified etc. Or just modified versions of official lore.
I would love to see much of it in print, but it would be a very different setting, more or less a modified version of the Grey Box.

I know this is an old thread...but I have to say this...
First Id have mystras guardianship over time, create a "time rope" that "snaps back" to a bit before that... so Mystra manages to forsee the disaster.
and save the dark seldarine, from beingdestroyed by Designs a child should be able to see through.

I have two ideas for much cooler cataclysisms though.
Forgot what the Elven name was but their was the organization the "victorious blade of the People" that thinks humans are all Vermin, and need to be exterminated... what if their research into plagues, bore fruit... and wiped out the vast majority of nonelves
"masss ressurection" doesnt happen very often lets face it, so I dont think its neccessary to have soem special explanation for why those killed cant be raised.
this would lead, im hopingto elves being suddenly thrust into having one last chance to reclaim a position as the preeminent sentient race on Faerun.
Do they let that opportunity, slip by them, or seize something they know is inherently tainted from where it came.

Finally, I'd alter the lady penitent trilogy just abit, by A: having Lloth Die instead of eilistraee, And B: Having Dark elves appear as "dusky" elves with White hair as described in cormanthor, not brown skinned with black hair. |

all I need to do is put Valthier Edonil'Barra in there (where he actually originated from) and watch his expansionistic investment grow.
see, he'd eventually take over Skullport, and make that a base of opperations. he'd also open a permanant portal to the Demiplane city of Union in whatever location was most conveniant -- probably somewhere in Silverymoon, or in an outpost on the Sword Coast North. Faerun's already so broken with planar connections and Epic-Level Characters that it realymakes no difference, other than adding a conveniant artery for Travel and Trade. |

Hmm, I've created some stuff I'd love to import- my drow pirate nation on the Underdark outskirts of either the Sea of Fallen Stars or perhaps somewhere in the Moonshaes or down near Chult or around the Moonsea. I'd also add in some of my favorite items, like the Flute of Puppies from the Encyclopedia Magica. (And the other instrument variants I created, along with the music-loving and slightly twisted mage who invented them.) Another one I'd import would be my Daywalker Ring, a powerful ancient artifact made for vampires.
I'd import a race I came up with, too- a desert-dwelling relative of the treant that resembles a Saguaro cactus, which is intelligent and mobile. Vaguely reminiscent of the FF7 cactuars, in that they can shoot their needles at enemies. |

-I have stats for something almost exactly like that, that I'll see if I still have saved on my computer when I get home. When I gave up the Forgotten Realms and D&D, I erased a lot of the half-done work on stuff that I had, so I might of erased them. I hope not. |
