Does anyone know if the exact nature of their relationship was ever fleshed out?
Because if not I'll just assume they rented a two room apartment sometime before 4th ed and are subletting to Dugmaren.

My latest Realms-based short story, about a bard, a paladin of Lathander and the letter of the law, Debts Repaid. It takes place before the "shattering" and gives the bard Arion a last gasp before he plunges into the present.http://candlekeep.com/campaign/logs/log-debts.htm |

The entry for "Dumathoin" in Demihuman Deities touches on their relationship a little. As does the On Hallowed Ground tome as well.
Going from memory though, I think this relationship has always been somewhat vague in the lore. |

Considering the hatred dwarves and mind flayers have for each other, I can't see their deities getting along very well. I could more easily accept Dumathoin making buddies with Ladguer or Deep Duerra than with Ilsensine. |

I'll definitely look into it, good sir.

I know - I always loved that. I once ran a campaign with a follower of Dumathoin and had to come up with a bit more Dogma for him. I based the meat of Dumathoin's ideals on a series of "Secrets" that the god had created for his clergy to keep, and decided that the situation with Ilsensine was the initiating Secret, setting the most loyal on the path to Divine Champion, and that often drove some of the clergy into madness (the logic of the situation being too much for their faith - kinda like Morpheus' blue and red pills ).
Long story short, Ilsensine's nature deals heavily with secrets, and perhaps there is a balance in that mind-flayers are LITERALLY takers of knowledge... |

Wait wait wait. Looks like I've missed some important dwarven lore. Dumathoin and Ilsensine are buddies? |
If I were a ranger, I would pick NDA for my favorite enemy |

Yes they are...sort of. It seems to be a sort of begrudging respect between them, but no one knows why. I think most of the dwarven pantheon would consider it a great evil, so I'd imagine ol' Duma does what he does best - keeps it secret.
This brings me to another point. Personally I LOVE that some secrets go unsolved. It'd be a shame if someone released all the answers to the Realms' most puzzling issues. As a DM, it's always tough when canon goes the exact opposite of a major campaign.
Plus, it's fun to argue about what the most plausible answer is. :D |
