No, that's not a new weapon in the Adventurer's Vault.

So, this morning, the Sage, all unwitting, put my mortal life in danger when he, as Mama says, "'bout near give me a heart attack" when I read a post of his that offered this link. (Wow, there's a lot of commas in that sentence!)

I... I don't know quite what to say here. Do you realize that there are hundreds and hundreds of articles, essays, art galleries and excerpts listed there.

Has this material been catalogued anywhere? Entered on a bibliography? Has it been (please, oh please, say yes) indexed?

Man, I knew I was in for a lot of work (pleasant work, even joyful work) when I realized that, in addition to "mastering" the 4E lore I wanted to go back and see what I've missed, but that was just taking all the printed gaming material, novels, and anthologies into account.

I had a vague idea that the recent online-only 4E articles were joining an extant body of web based lored, and I've even looked at some of the individual pieces, but I had no idea there was so much. Even if most of this stuff can be discounted as excerpts or otherwise of limited relevance, there has to be hundreds of pages of stuff here.

If nobody's had a go at it it yet, I guess I gotta add another project. I'm going to .pdfize a lot of this stuff (for my own personal and private use) and at least do an annotated bibliography. But if anybody has already done something similar, I'd love to know about it.

And here's the big question. Is this it? If I park an annotated bibliography of the stuff linked off that page on a site somewhere and add the 4E articles as well, will I have covered all of the online canonical Realmslore? If not, is there a master list of online canonical Realmslore someplace?

My Realms novel, Sandstorm, is now available for ordering.

I don´t know if there is an official list of the online Realmslore. Some scribes, and some people all around the world, have make pdfs of some of this free content. I already have seen the Wyrms of the North, the Elminster Speaks, and the Perilous Gateways, in pdf format (what is a good way to help and catalogue all this scrolls ). It´s an titanic effort, made by fans, only to make the life easy for a lot of other fans, and it´s very appreciated.

If it's FR and it's been published on the WotC site, then I've likely got it stored in the multiple archive-drives I've got hooked up to my main machine. There's no real index, and not much of a bibliography -- it's mostly all organised around the classic "I know where it is when I need to find it" archival system.

Having said that, and as CoM notes above, I've got .rtf, .doc, .pdf, and .soff compilations for most of the main series of articles by Ed, Eric, and Steven.

Ditto. I've kept most of the articles as Word docs, but a lot I've flipped to pdf. But there's no real index or anything, like the Sage's setup. And for the bits of lore dropped here by various writers/designers, I've got an utter buttload of text files -- usually named something like "Ed on this" or "Steven Schend on that", and organized into folders by their names.

The Google Desktop Search app makes it easy to find stuff, with it all scattered about.

Thanks, mods! It's good to know the material is stored in multiple places and ways. My own concerns have less to do with the preservation and archiving side of Candlekeep's mission than with the bibliographic and indexing side of things. What to do, what to do...

I don't see the WE's listed there.

Here's a link for those (since they could be considered part of any "Online FR Material' compilation).

Also, just for the hell of it, a link to the page that leads to that page, which also includes the 'Freebies' (Old Edition material) and the 'Map-A-Week" (one of my personal favorites).

Awesome! Thanks so much!

Just out of curiosity, why not go ahead and post it here?

And also, if it's "most but not all," do you need a hand wrangling the outliers?

And for the record, there's an odd thing with one of the Realms By Night articles. The Intro and the first nine articles all contain links to each other. Article 10, however, is not linked to from any of the other articles, and has no links to any of the other articles.

You'll have to add the short fiction linked from this page, and Ed's postings to REALMS-L (some of which aren't archived online) and this site, at least.

How are you doing with the Dragon, Dungeon and Polyhedron articles?

Hah! No wonder they wanted a fresh start!

Do you mean articles from those magazines that are online? If you're talking about print articles, that's kind of a different cuppa. I thought that the magazines had only migrated to the web in the last year. And, actually, I don't even know what Polyhedron is.

No wonder? It's like the owners of a partially completed, partly furnished building, with people living in it, deciding to abandon it for a new one.

I mean the printed magazines. Polyhedron was the newszine of the RPGA which published dozens of "Everwinking Eye" articles by Ed Greenwood, Eric Boyd's "Forgotten Deities" column which led to Faiths & Avatars, half a dozen miscellaneous articles by Eric and Steven Schend, as well as a load of Living City nonsense.

Yeah, we're different places on the motivations, there, but I take your point.

I've not come across a complete list of Realms articles in those places, I don't think. And I think I lack the resources to collect 'em at this point. I'm still trying to Paizo and AbeBooks my way to even a significant percentage of the "big" 2.0/3.0/3.5 supplements!

Christopher, you should also take a look at "Yet Another Forgotten Realms Webpage" out on the net, which although not updated in some time, was a compilation of quotes from Ed, Steven Schend, Eric Boyd, Elaine Cunningham, and other Realms designers and fiction writers, drawn from early e-mails, the Realms listserv, and other places. Some of it's dated, but some of it is as relevant today as ever, and quite useful to DMs, game designers, and fiction writers working in the Realms.
As per the Realms agreement, anything said by Ed is canon until contradicted in print by a TSR or WotC publication, so of the material I'm referring to, at least Ed's words are canon. (I know some gamers prefer other definitions of Realms canon, but that's akin to claiming what one wants the law to be trumps what the law is [doesn't work on most cops, lawyers, or judges ].)

AJA's site isn't working too well these days. Fortunately, though, I've managed to compile just about everything he had stored on that site into various files and folders in my archives. And even as a few entries in the Candlekeep's Guide to Forgotten Realms FAQ.

Wow! This has been a busy scroll! I checked it out shortly after it was first created, followed Mr. Rowe's link, and was busy maniacally downloading stuff until about 2 minutes ago, when I finished going through all the links. Sage: How many DVD-R's would it take to transcribe your hard drive's Realmslore contents, and what would the postage cost from Australia to Canada? Or, alternatively, does Candlekeep have an FTP directory you can upload those to? I'm assuming we're within our rights to give these files away, since that's what Wizards was doing in the first place...

You can never have too much Realmslore... so saith Ed, I suspect...

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

Christopher: I'm in the process of PDFizing the lot of it (the downloads from the archive page link you posted), but right now I need to sleep. I should have the PDFs all done by the end of the weekend, I hope. I have a line on the PDF versions of the entire "Wyrms of the North" series, and hopefully that comes through this weekend too. I have so much Realmslore to read, I'm giddy with anticipation.

Most of the saved Realmslore is spread across multiple external drives. I don't even want to hazard a guess at how many DVD-R's that would translate to.

A short while ago, we had a similar discussion here at Candlekeep re: compilations of Realmslore from WotC. I brought up the possibility of an FTP which would make the files I have accessible to those who don't have them. As it is, I'm still attempting to find one that'll serve my needs. But when I do, you'll be among those I'll notify.

*drool* More Realmslore! More, I say! I'm trying to keep myself too busy living in the Realms' past to worry about the present until that 100-year gap of history has been filled... and who knows, maybe by then, my campaign will be ready to see what DR 1479 has to offer...

Edit: And yes, I got that "Wyrms of the North" archive I mentioned here earlier too, thanks to another friendly scribe here at Candlekeep.

That's fine. Posting links to threads over on the WotC boards is something nearly all of us have done at one time or another.

Indeed. Though some refer to WotC's boards as The Boards That Shall Not Be Named*, or things similar, it's a fact that many of our scribes have come to us from there, and a lot of people here are active on both boards. Most of us regard the WotC forums as just another forum -- better than some forums, worse than others.

There's no prohibition against links to over there, either tacit or overt. In fact, though I've not had reason to post it in a long time, one of my handy links is for the converted NPC thread started by Green Giant -- I found that thread when I was still over there, and it's just too good not to share.

*Despite my wrongful banning, I've never had too many issues with the WotC forums. I've only used the "Shall Not Be Named" nickname once or twice, myself (it's too cumbersome!), but I find it quite amusing.
