The Jhaamdathan Pantheon thread recently risen from the dead has, in addition to many other features of awesome, a few lines of Gray Richardson's that jumped out at me. Namely:
"If we go by the opening chapter of Faiths & Pantheons, there were supposed to be at least 4 major human proto-pantheons and a few other minor ones that merged into the greater Faerūnian pantheon around the time of the Dawn Cataclysm."
and
"Then there was the Talfiric pantheon centered in the Western Heartlands. We know it included Tempus, also Talos, Umberlee, Auril, and probably Malar and Loviatar (all the gods of Fury). Also maybe Shialia, Lurue and Mielikki and any of the gods associated with the North. Lathander appears to have been known in the Talfiric pantheon before Amaunator actually died.
Actually there might be an argument that the North had one of those minor pantheons that was originally separate from the Talfiric pantheon, but which merged together with it early on."
Based on this, a tiny little idea kindled in my brain - a High Forest/Northern pantheon based on a human culture that lived in the High Forest (between Earlann and the dwarves of Dardath) during the second and first millennium pre-Dalereckoning, let's say.
So who would be in this Northern Pantheon?
Well, Jannath, Selune, Amaunator (minus the legalistic aspects the Netherese gave to him) and Mystryl seem obvious candidates, in addition to Silvanus, Shiallia and Lurue, plus the Tree Ghost and Tapann the Undying (korred god and Shiallia's father; he also serves as a link to the other sylvan powers who are at least recognized if not worshipped by our High Forest humans). Mielikki's also a good possibility, I think, especially because I have the notion of four demigods, each one representing the four seasons. Which brings us to Auril, the last canon deity that occurs to me.
So what else do we need here?
* Spring and summer gods are needed to round out the seasonal quartet. * A death god(dess) - Jergal is the obvious candidate, but I like the idea of a seperate, less alien deity who later gets merged into Jergal or abandoned entirely in his favor during the eventual formation of the Faerunian pantheon. * A demigod of sorcery/wild magic, a wilder counterpart to Azuth, Savras, et al. ? * And some dark and/or evil gods.
Suggestions? Comments? What do you think, sirs?
