To what extent do most FR DMs, or fans in general, see the world in terms of the D&D rules? Are these rules an integral part of the setting, or are they something authors can or should set aside for storytelling reasons? As an unrepentant caster-junkie, I'm most interested in people's view of rules pertaining to magic, from magical items to Vancian preparation. Should the rules players exist under be relevant to NPCs, for example? What's gained or lost by allowing NPCs, in a campaign or in a novel, freedom from these restraints?

But what have all the passing years/Done, but breed new angers, fears?/Show me now an equal worth/To innocence I earned at birth.

This is an interesting question. I must admit I have somewhat historically ducked the question by tending to ignore the rules where the needs of the setting or adventure demands it. Mind you, I've always been a "screw the rules, let's RP" type of DM, even with DnD, so that has definitely coloured my view of how rules interact with setting. We're lucky with Faerun to have a vibrant living setting that can allow this option.

The most important thing to note that, no matter what path you take, whither it be rules-adherence, or setting-predominance is to be consistent. And to be fair. No wait, that's two most important things. Ok, the two most important things...

I'm with StarBog here. Whatever you do, be consistent. Personally, my group is fairly rules heavy, but we do have some, uh, creative views on a few rules. I'm much more apt to change the NPC in question to fit my campaign's needs than I am to change the rules to fit the NPC.

You ask me what I crave above all things? Knowledge.
