I'm considering trying to use the 4E rules in a new realms campaign, and thinking about how much conversation was needed. Made me ask the question what makes the races of Faerun different? And I found I'm not sure of the answer. I'm not talking about mechanics, or pluses on attributes etc. More why is realms Moon elf, different to any other Moon elf?

Hmmm, not sure--what other moon elves are you talking about, here, besides the ones from the Realms? |
"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams." --Richard Greene (letter to Time) |

What 'generic elves'? There are 1E/Gygaxian elves, 2E elves (very lightly defined outside specific settings and optional sourcebook material), 3E elves, 4E elves, elves of the various D&D-related settings, and many other sub-versions whenever authors haven't followed one of these models. Which of these is your point of reference?
Even then, with such a general question, all we'll be able to do in less-than-essay-length posts will be to point up a few discrete, easily visible but likely unrepresentative differences. You won't gain any real understanding of what moon elves are like without reading detailed Realms sources such as the 'elven mindset' and historical information in Cormanthyr (which can be downloaded here).
Or, if you have a more specific query, we can answer that. |

Your response kind of represents my problem. I'm looking for a concise answer thats represent what each race is like. I'd settle for a short essay on each race, if someone can point me in the right direction. |

I'd read the info in Cormanthyr: Empire of the Elves sourcebook and the first few chapters of the Evermeet sourcebook. Races of Faerun sourcebook could help as well. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Depending on how concise you want, the race entries in the Old Grey Box ought to work. |
