"These things also I have observed: that knowledge of our world is
to be nurtured like a precious flower, for it is the most precious
thing we have. Wherefore guard the word written and heed
words unwritten and set them down ere they fade . . . Learn
then, well, the arts of reading, writing, and listening true, and they
will lead you to the greatest art of all: understanding."

Interesting new lore on Kir-Lanans. Seems reasonable. And as some here have speculated, Shar indeed got a power boost.

No surprise that Shar's church becomes centred in Shade. I wonder how the Temple of Old Night feels about that (assuming Calimshan exists anymore!)

Just out of curiosity... Do we know how many of these excerpts are planned for release?

I wonder how long it will take for Shar to become powerful enough to really do that "ultimate dissolution" part on the whole of what is left of Faerun. Anyone else betting on 5th edition release date?

As an aside: whilst I like, and can understand on the most basic level, Shar's ultimate desires for dissolution I've always wondered what would happen if she achieved her goal. She's always sought a return to the state before Chauntea, Mystra etc. were 'born' but that would mean she just wants to endlessly battle with Selune.

I mean, does she seek oblivion for herself as well as everyone/thing else? Is she the ultimate nihilist? Would she 'kill' herself if no other gods or things existed?

On a purely philosophical level, the motivations of Gods are quite obtuse (as they should be), but I'd quite like to understand this one a bit more.

*sigh* The "Shadow = kewl!" trend continues... Gods, I'm tired of that one.

I don't like the kir-lanan falling under Shar's control. Kir-lanan have always been utterly anti-deity. I see them using clerics for their own purposes, not joining up with them.

I find it all annoying, sorry. Even Kir-lanans love Shar, now!

Agreed, Wooly.

The only thing that could, IMO, cause a change in the kir-lanan would be a deity which granted them souls and afterlives. Without souls, why would they abandon their ideology and follow godslaves?

Given that Kir-lanan and Shar both want to destroy all gods, they have much in common. It seems to me that it was very easy for Shar to deceive the Kir-lanan and so gain control over them (and now they haven't a choice any more).

All gods would include Shar. And yet, they are apparently willing to serve her. There is no mention of deception, it's just a thing of "hey, we hate all gods, but this one is kinda cool, so we'll overlook the fact that she is a god."

Maybe I should stop calling it the Shattered Realms and start calling it the Shadowed Realms. Because now, it's all about Shar and Shadows... Even the reborn Harpers are only concerned about one thing: Shadovars and Shadowy stuff.

I love the last part of this excerpt, titled "Encounter Groups" where it says that

quote:
The Church of Shar has few allies.

but goes on to mention

quote:

plentiful assistance in Netheril
many evil creatures, especially those of the Shadowfell
disciples of Talona and Sseth

This doesn't sound to me like a group that has few allies.

While seeing anything in 4th edition stats makes me twitch, I got no problem with Shar. I mean a woman who wants to suck the life out of everything? Sounds about right to me .

If I waited till I knew what I was doing, I'd never get anything done.

Yes, that does seem inconsistent.

It would be nice if you named the actual thread, seeing as they move around a lot (unless you want to link to the actual thread, that is).

Ah, sorry. I actually wasn't trying to point to a particular thread but to the discussion board at large. I actually don't play NWN2, but since the Purple Dragon Knight indicated that he no longer cares about the Realms, I thought maybe he'd be interested in finding a place where folks are discussing what he is interested in.

Mystra was "too powerful" and now its the "anti-Mystra's turn". I also fully agree with you about Kir-Lanans being anti-deity doesnt mix well with Shar controlling them.

Yeah, they've really gone from one extreme to the other. Which is ironic, since Mystra being too powerful was supposedly a problem, but having Shar be too powerful is apparently desirable.

Maybe because...

1) Shar is a villain, so that's okay.
2) All the cool kids like Shar best, anyway.*
3) In 4th Edition the Gods are just really big monsters for level 30 PCs, so you can kill her and take her stuff. I bet she drops some nice epics.

*My experiences playing on NWN have seen a plethora of 'emo-Sharran' PCs, in any number of FR settings. She's a popular god, but also one whose (PC) followers didn't seem to actually understand the religion, as often as not. Of course, ever since 3E started, WoTC seems to have just showered her with all sorts of gifts anyway, so...

Bah, more Shadowbaker rubbish - lets throw out previous FR lore because we can and tie it into our favourite new uber-deity and the Shadowbakers of Netheril.

Rino, it would have been too *complex* to comprehend if there was a race of monsters that reviled gods and fought their servants -- not to mention the new world-wide "Evil Alliance" ("We shall only fight heroes -- not each other") which has formed after the Spellplague. *SIGH*...

Probably true ... so lets form an UBERguild and have a world-first Shar kill? No, wait ... that would be WoW ...

The fact that some people prefer "social problems" in roleplaying got truly ignored and without a load of different gods and good societies the amount of possible intrigue is reduced to "pitiful". All is focused on "kill stuff", so evil monsters get priority for surviving, even though good guys should have a bigger chance due to altruism / teamwork. But then the teamworkers all got the "big foot" like Mezro. In Warhammer Fantasy there is/was an orcish spell to call the foot of your god to step onto your enemies. Mezro truly reminded me of this.
