From "Violent, Crazy Grownups Run Amok This Week" -- August 1, 2008
quote:
What is training the grownups to kill this week?

The bloody week began with Sunday's horrific church shooting in Knoxville, Tennessee by a 58-year-old who was a big fan of some of the same conservative pundits who blame video games for youth violence.

Today a 40-year-old guy randomly beheaded the guy sitting next to him on a Greyhound bus in Canada. In Wisconsin a camouflage-clad middle-aged man opened fire on some kids swimming in a local river, killing three.

Horrible, tragic stuff. And if we had three teens committing such atrocities in a single week, we'd probably have a congressional investigation underway by now. But adults who kill randomly will almost always be written off as crazy, which they probably are.

So why is it that video games are blamed for kids who kill? Why aren't young killers also seen as unbalanced people with access to weapons?

UPDATE: A few hours after I wrote this, a 32-year-old ne'er do well went on a workplace rampage, killing two people at a book distributing business located about 10 miles from GP HQ.

For more on the swimmer shooting, see: Niagara Wisconsin Shooting Of Three Teenagers On July 31 2008 Swimming In Menominee River and "Gunman Kills Three Teens at Swimming Hole", which ought to put the sociology of this into perspective. The book warehouse killing took place in Bristol, Pennsylvania.

Yesterday we learned more about the killing on the Greyhound bus (Police tape: Canada bus killer ate victim's flesh] and then this and then this was in today's news: Gruesome crime shocks Greek isle.

Not amok, but still gruesome this week: "Mother of 8 found dead in freezer, husband charged."

I would like to know if the phenomenon of "running amok" is known anywhere on Toril? Have any of the DMs here ever unleashed an amok NPC in the presence of their players?

Who have been some of the most famous "mad-dog killers" in Toril's history -- not military brutes like General Mattick or sacrificing priests who had a "rational" motive to kill but psychotic mass murderers or serial killers - those as notorious and seemingly inexplicable as Jack the Ripper?

I have a mouth, but I am in a library and must not scream.

It's almost Cthulu-esque these days, Jamallo. Or Ravenloft...

Off-topic: The Thira-Santorini story buried in the midst of Cthulu-esque events reminds me of Earthdawn/Shadowrun game.

I'm apparently a germaine GM. I wouldn't have conceptualized randomly hacking off heads and parading them, eating them, et al. Then again, there are periodically minors gaming with us, so perhaps I self-edit really amok stuff...

I blame it on the public mail system.

Else, why do so many mail-personal "go postal"?

Maybe thats why Faerūn never devloped a Mail system... perhaps they aren't really as 'behind' as we think they are.

I'm about to release "The Tilverton Slasher" upon them. Essentially Jack the Knife.

Also known on other forums as ChazSexington, Kusghuul, and Claudius.
