Could anyone tell me if there is anymore published details of this region above and beyond that published in Unapproachable East? I have read the novel in the Priest Series set in the area and I am contemplating setting my next campaign in the region. Delving into the ruins of Old Narfell gives me cause to setup some fiendish traps and encounters for my players. In particular I am interested in details of either Solin or Eastwatch if possible. Any help in this regard would be much appreciated.

Hi. Ed did a series of (8, I believe) articles detailing Uthmere to serve as the "base" for a campaign, on the Wizards website two years(?) back.
I'm hoping the links are still there and functioning. Sage? Wooly? Kuje?

I knew that that area looked familiar to me for a reason, it was cause of those links!

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Great choice!

The Great Dale has so much potential! I haven't been able to find any information on Solin or Eastwatch so, if you dig up anything, please do post. The articles on Uthmere mentioned above are pure gold, of course, as they are by Ed.

Besides the legacies of Narfell, don't forget the legacies of even more ancient times. The Great Barrow is the resting place of the corpse of the Untheric deity, Nergal, who was slain by orcs in the Orcgate War. There is a ruined castle near the 'Barrow that was briefly inhabited by a prince from Impiltur before he and his entourage simply vanished one night.

The Rotting Man's fortress was originally a connected to drow demon-summoners. Descendants of those drow now live in the "segmented city" of Undrek'thoz. The drow of one of the city "segments" dwell in a cavern once inhabited by advanced hobgoblins. and these drow are now known for their martial ability. If you want a way to sneak the Book of Nine Swords into your game, I think you have a perfect opportunity right there.

The Underdark in that region also has a site known as the Boneyard. While Underdark refers to the various undead that lair there, I would personally prefer to use this place as the Kingdom (or Empire) of the Ghouls, as per the classic 2E Dungeon adventure or the 3.5E version by Wolfgang Baur under the Open Design project.

Back to Uthmere, my plans for the city involve some changes. I like some of the ideas in the Shadows over Istivin series in Dungeon magazines 117-119 and so I would probably remove Lord Uthlain and replace him with a Cyricist cleric or something similar. Make Uthmere darker. If you're familiar with the book Gangs of New York upon which the movie was based, that's the feel I would be aiming for. I've also thought that Uthmere would make an ideal place for pirates if Lord Uthlain were removed. They would have somewhere to shelter from Impiltur's navy and a place to build ships because of the plentiful supply of timber in the two major forests.

If any of this is of interest, I would be happy to post a few more notes.

Best

Post away, all ideas and thoughts greatfully received.

When (if) I ever get round to running a mini campaign in the area I was going to hook it into the Dark Druids module by Rob Kuntz (pub: Troll Lord Games) as use them as the insidious evel at the heart of the great wood that the PC' slowly uncover.

Cheers

Damian

So saith Ed. I've never said he was sane, have I?
Gods, all this writing and he's running a constant fantasy version of Coronation Street in his head, too. .

Thank for the pointers, I have copied them to my appropriate campaign folder so as to have them available for easy reference. I am going to post a couple of questions to Ed about the area surrounding Uthmere.

And I want to say that I´m very grateful for this article. Ed really left a very good point to start my campaigns is the Unnaprocheable East.

Dwarf, DM, husband, and proud of this! :P
