Even though trolls are well known for their regenerative abilities, I was wondering how long-lived they can be, barring permanent death by fire/acid? I wouldn't think their abilities could stave off natural aging, or can they "re-youthen" themselves by hacking off a limb and allowing it to regrow (instead of reattachment)?
Its really a minor detail for me, but one i'm curious about.

Context: One of my villains is a VERY old troll shaman, from Siluvanede's last days, who has endured through time as a greenbound troll (LEoF template). He's gathered a circle of elder trolls from various tribes for support and is mustering a new horde.

A bit of research shows that there is an "ecology of the troll" article in dragon magazine #301, which I don't possess, so maybe some helpful sage can check that for me?

I asked the same question in February I think. The discussion should be in Running the Realms, with Trolls aging as title.

Come to think of it, I wonder if there was a mention of the exact age in the old Monstrous Compendium or manual for 2ed. I will check and come back to you.

Found it.

MC Vol. 1 Trolls live 100 years or more.

I would take it over 100 is a very old troll that will die soon from old age.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."
