The Lifedrain spell has been mentioned several times in FR books both 2E and 3E, with only the indication that it literally drained the land of all its fertility. Can anyone point me out to a more thoroughly detailed discussion on this epic spell, preferably by a FR designer?
Also, the Blood Dragon spell was mentioned in GhotR, what did that do exactly?
Thanks to the great sages here for whatever answers they can provide.

Well, quoting myself, from the other thread where you mentioned it...

(heh, the Lifedrain spell was one I've been longing to see done).
Unless I am mistaken (and I've not yet replaced the book, so I can't check), this spell was detailed in the 2E Anauroch sourcebook.

I have asked this before, didn't I? Sorry about that. I thought I was just having a case of deja'vu (which I get sometimes), but it seems I already have asked this.
I'll check Anauroch, thanks. |

If you did, I missed it. I replied in the other thread, where you simply mentioned the spell, then came to this thread, where you actually asked about it. So I just quoted myself. |

Check out pages 7,8,9 specifically.
The second edition Wizard's Spell Compendium Vol II (2168XXX1501) also has details on the spell on page 513 and 514. |

Lifedrain can be found, too, in the Ruins of Myth Drannor boxed set.
Check Campaign Guide to Myth Drannor, p. 57 |

Thanks again fellas.
I managed to somehow do a 3E conversion of this spell for my games. Tell me what you think:
Lifedrain Transmutation [Evil] Level: Sor/Wiz 8 Components: V, S, M, XP Casting Time: 1 full-round Effect: Area of dehydration Area: 100-ft.-radius hemisphere/level, centered on the caster Duration: 1 year/level Saving Throw: See text Spell Resistance: Yes Use of this mighty spell is thought to have created much of the lifelessness at the heart of the vast desert Anauroch. This spell affects only water in geographical form (lakes, rivers, oceans), or in meteorological form (rain, snow). It does not affect water contained in living things. A lifedrain spell destroys water within its area of effect---and prevents water from existing there as well. Water cannot fall into, form within, condense within, or flow into the spherical area of the effect of this spell. Not even magically created water can be summoned within the area. All water spells are blocked when cast within or into the area of effect. Living creatures find conditions within the area of effect to be very, very dry uncomfortably so. For each hour that one spends performing any sort of activity except simple rest, that creature suffers 1d8 points of dehydration damage. Plants in the area of effect begin taking double this damage each hour until killed. Plants cannot grow within a lifedrain spell's area and desert-like conditions soon occur. This spell is immune to dispel magic and only the effects of wish, miracle, or epic spells can dispel it. In time, with the lack of any sort of water forming, the weather patterns begin to shift towards that of a desert as all animal and plant life become barren. If the duration of this spell ends before it is dispelled after the first year, then it would take centuries to restore the land back to the way it originally was.
Material Component: A piece of bone and a fire of any size
XP Cost: 1,000 XP
Thinking I should change the damage to plants from each hour to each month, since it was a spell desgined to take effect over a period of time so as to not bring immediate attention. |
