On intention of connecting Mystara and the Forgotten Realms

@McCarthy_JT
@TheEdVerse I was looking over a copy of the old Principalities of Glantri gazateer earlier this year, and a peculiar idea sort of took up residence in the corners of my mind. Without putting it all out there, is there any chance that there was ever an intention or an idea of connecting Mystara and the Forgotten Realms in any sense through the Principalities?
@TheEdVerse
Yes. Unofficially, so DMs could run a high-level "across the worlds" campaign (like the later Planescape or the Spelljammer novels that involved travel from TSR world to TSR world), but the product lines remained distinct legally.
(Magic wielders controlling portals.)
Given the original requesters hints, I'd bet it revolves around the athora of Thay (or something similar) and the radiance / aka Nucleus of the Spheres. Of course, there's also the similarity between the name of "Mystra" as the goddess of magic and the world name of "Mystara".
There's also the nucleus of the spheres paradox which in some small ways resembles the Abeir Toril split.
https://pandius.com/nspherpx.html
Ed also said there was a portal connecting the Five Shires to Luiren, and that one was settled by hin from the other -- but he didn't specify which settled which. |

On 'sunsigh'
Kokopelli — 11/10/2024 10:01 AM
Friend @Ed Greenwood, I was just re-reading your write-up of Nimbral, posted lo these many moons ago on the WotC site, back when they routinely gave us free lore. I found myself noting one particular thing: "sunsigh (that moment after highsun when the sun has clearly passed its highest point)" – is this reckoning of time used elsewhere in the Realms, or is it purely a Nimbran thing?
Ed Greenwood — 11/10/2024 12:08 PM
It's a Nimbran thing, but has spread to a few sages and far travelers, purely because they like the idea. However, use it in other company, and the reaction will be bewilderment. |

On Karsus becoming Asmodeus
Gahbreeil — 13/11/2024 3:20 AM
@Ed Greenwood Is Karsus the mortal whom became Asmodeus?
Ed Greenwood — 13/11/2024 11:17 AM
No. Asmodeus was around long before Karsus was born. |

On splinter organizations
Joe Chang — 21/11/2024 11:38 AM
A Patreon suggestion: could you please show us some splinter organizations in the Realms? An offshoot group of the Harpers or Zhents is easier for me to run as a DM because I don't have to know (or pretend to know) everything that is going on with the larger groups. Or I can give the antagonists unclear motivations and unexpected behaviors (like ex-Zhents who want to do some good). And it allows for the possibility for my players to definitively vanquish a group of bad-guys and get an extra sense of accomplishment.
Ed Greenwood — 23/11/2024 11:49 PM
Plenty of new, smaller "power groups" (factions, if you're WotC) are on the docket during the months ahead. |

On tax exemptions for Cormyr shrines and temples
Joe Chang — 3/12/2024 8:44 PM
Dear @Ed Greenwood and @Brian Cortijo. Are temples and shrines exempt from taxation in Cormyr?
Ed Greenwood — 4/12/2024 12:56 AM
Yes. However, it's customary, when the temple or shrine is located in a settlement that collects local taxes (for road upkeep, signage, night lighting, bridge maintenance, and policing), for the clergy who staff it to make an annual donation to the settlement equal to the (realty) taxes paid by the highest local regular payer. |

On path to lichdom
kageura necromancer wizard — 5/12/2024 12:08 AM
Hello @Ed Greenwood, my name is owen stacey, i have been a fan of your forgotten realms Faerun for some time now. My bookshelf is filled with forgotten realms novels, and I even have mike Schley's sword coast map hanging above my bed at home, thank you for creating such a rich and inspiring world. I was wondering if it would be ok to ask you a question concerning your Faerun. Some of my friends and family and I are making a group-focused fan novel set in forgotten realms. my character is a lawful evil wizard necromancer who pursues becoming a lich and I wondered if you had advice for what method to use for seeking the secret of lichdom. Some ideas I thought of for the method based on what I know and understand of Faerun are ideas such as joining a spellcaster organization( such as the dragon cult or house Orogoth) or making a bargain with a lich. I know in the "worlds and realms" book released by wotc a few months ago Mordenkainen states the Shadowfell is an ideal place for wizards seeking the secrets of undeath but I know that the book is not tailored specifically for your setting and thus was unsure whether it would be a viable option or not. I wondered what you may suggest or recommend? Any commentary on your part would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and for creating such an incredible world!
Best regards,
Owen Stacey

Ed provided a recipe for lichdom in the 2E sourcebook REF3 Lords of Darkness (not to be confused with the 3E Lords of Darkness book).
Ed Greenwood — 5/12/2024 3:35 AM
George has pointed you to one road to lichdom I've outlined in lore. There are many others (I'd avoid taking up with an existing lich, as that is likely to end in slavery/life as expendable fodder). One route your character might consider is entering into service with local clergy of Velsharoon, who can provide a clear and organized sequence of steps to lichdom, each one "paid for" by a service to the church of Velsharoon on a clear, contractual basis. I will do a video on becoming a lich, when I can get to this topic (so, spring 2025?). |

On gods controlling the divinity passed down to children
Spellslamzer — 7/12/2024 6:22 AM
@Ed Greenwood The children of a god and a mortal is often born a demigod. However, the Seven Sisters were born with some level of divinity and power because Mystra possessed their mother, but are not full demigods. And, if I'm correct, Bhaalspawn are born with a tiny spark of divinity, but don't necessarily have any power from it. Are gods able to control how much divinity their children are born with, and if not, what factors influence their in-born divinity?
Ed Greenwood — 10/12/2024 8:37 AM
The amount of control, from none at all to capable fine-tuning, depends on the nature of the god trying, and how much they know about the process (through research and/or experience and/or observing). Mystra had a lot of control both via her essential nature/portfolio, and research/preparation; Bhaal had none at all. |

You know, THAT would make a good article. No, I don't mean a mechanical templating process for making children of gods. I mean an exploration LORE wise of what people (human, demihuman, humanoid, monstrous humanoid, mulan incarnation, demonlord spawn, etc....) OR monsters (spawn of a dragon god, beholder queen spawn, divine infused elder brains, elder evils, etc...) exist in the realms or in the past (if they had an impact on the past) that have divinity and/or immortality through breeding OR some divine infusion prior to their birth. I know that we KNOW of Mystra's chosen, Bhaalspawn, Bane is known to have progeny.... but I know here and there in the lore there's dozens of others. There's also numerous children of demon and devil lords (and why not yugoloth lords, into this mix), especially demon spawn in Narfell's past. I imagine ALL the gods excepting a few have probably dabbled in this arena, and likely most of these children have extended lifespans if not immortality. I don't mean chosen mind you, as anyone can be chosen by a god... I mean linkage of some sort via their creation. Regarding the immortality, it might even be that these children have to be careful against those who would siphon that off.
On THAT topic, I think it would be a very fine addition if we "found out" that this was one thing that the Imaskari were pursuing.... seeking divinely linked children and experimenting on taking that power for themselves (much like the Thayans were looking into draining chosen just before the second sundering). It might even be that the Thayans were working from the uncovered lore of the ancient Imaskari. Maybe even this "lore" was found in one of the "lost" Imaskari Imaskarcana. Maybe the Imaskari even decided to return to the worlds that their Mulan slaves came from via their portals and were capturing demigods there and bringing them back to Toril for this type of experimentation (or performing the experimentation on the Mulan homeworld and then returning home via the portals, where they believed themselve protected by the Imaskari Godswall Barrier). That may have been the trigger that made the Mulan gods send their manifestations in plane traversing/spelljamming ships to exact vengeance on the Imaskari for killing their direct children.
Finally, since I mentioned the Imaskarcana, what do we know of them. In order to start that conversation, putting some notes.
We know that the third one essentially was a lore book with odd pages that would answer questions directed to it in Roushoum language, but that it would become a trap that captured anyone that used a different language and turned them into a new page (Per 3e Underdark page 76).
The first imaskarcana is a purple metal crown with a blue sapphire that would answer questions about Imaskar if done in Roushoum (bonus to knowledge checks), gains some nice spell resistance, and could do limited turning of divine spells, and cast improved blink, antimagic aura, legend lore, gate, true seeing, and greater teleport. If any commands are issued to it that aren't in Roushoum language, the speaker is assaulted with feeblemind. It was used by the Imaskari Emperors/Lord Artificers.
The fifth imaskarcana was a scepter wielded by the High Generals of Imaskar. It contained military history of Imaskar that it would relay if asked in Roushoum. It conveyed decent spell resistance and could cast charm person, crushing despair, confusion, daze monster, mind fog, binding, demand, geas, mass hold monster, power word stun. Any commands issued to it in any other language than Roushoum would result in a disintegrate effect on the speaker.
Do we have any lore on the second, fourth, sixth, or seventh Imaskarcana? |

On every corner of Faerűn explored by published lore
Black Rabbit (coinín dubh) — 12/12/2024 11:23 PM
Saer @Ed Greenwood, a simple(?) yes or no: without revealing anything (especially anything that would run afoul of a NDA), has every part of Faerűn been explored in some part in published lore or is there some new undiscovered area that might or could be revealed sometime in the future?
Ed Greenwood — 13/12/2024 12:28 AM
There are LOTS of not-yet-covered areas on the surface of Toril. There are regions of Faerűn that have really only received the "undetailed overview map" treatment, too. So: YES. ;} |
