Hey folks,
I just got down re-reading this book and really enjoyed it. Sadly, I do think it got bogged down in some of the historical baggage of the "epic jungle tale" and colonialism as well as some unfortunate attempts to use tropes that didn't work well (the cannibal goblin tribals) but overall it was really good. I also felt it kind of predicted some later developments in fiction like the fact Mezro could easily be viewed as kind of Chultish version of Wakanda.
An isolated highly advanced (magically in this case) civilization that, nevertheless, has abandoned its surrounding people to be subject to the brutality of outsiders.
I admit, I forgot tabaxi were also a bunch of humans as well as cat people so my mental image of the book was screwed up for roughly half of it.

| I remember that book fondly. I particularly liked the talking Wombats. I read the novel shortly before the 5e Chult adventure came out, so there was a lot of discussion going on in various places about Tabaxi men vs catfolk, and I was intrigued to read more about the human side of that equation. |
