Hello-

I was looking for any references to Tieflings in published Lore. I know that there is the section about the race itself in the books - but I was more looking for NPCs etc. Novel references would be fine also.

I have a player who is looking to play one - and I will be looking to try and mesh things together with pre-existing references.

The simple idea they have is to have been born to a slave in Thay, and ended up free through several events.

I think what Steven meant by this reference was that her tiefling bloodline came from an alu-fiend, not that she was an alu-fiend.

The PGtF gives a few other reasonable backgrounds for Tieflings such as near Dragonspear Castle resulting from the DR 1356 gate (hmm... mass teenage Tiefling angst).

You're likely thinking of Khala -- under the "Raw Recruits" section:- The Demonlands: Khala of Peltarch (LN tiefling female F8/M7; alu-fiend).

Ah, see alu-fiends arn't tieflings, to me. They are half-fiends.

In the 2nd warlocks entry in Class Chronicles, I said that there were high concentrations in Thay and Unther. I'll past the paragraph specifically talking about tieflings (warlocks) in Thay.

"Tiefling warlocks are even more likely than others of their kind to exhibit obviously inhuman traits such as cloven hooves, a sulfurous reek, horns, a tail, or glowing red eyes. They tend to develop their powers at a young age, often encouraged by their ancestors to cultivate their horrible gifts. Other tieflings make pacts with evil outsiders to activate what they feel is dormant power within their souls. Twin tiefling warlocks work covertly for Samas Kul (UnA), Master of the Guild of Foreign Trade in Bezantur. The corpulent red wizard uses the warlocks known as Tolyst and Finora to spy on and intimidate his trade rivals. Tolyst is easily recognized by his large fangs, wolfish grin, and orange eyes. Finora can be identified by her catlike tail and yellow cat's eyes."

Xvim also brought a large army of Tieflings into Faerun when he invaded Westgate during the 7th century

Tieflings also exist in fair numbers in Impiltur, Damara, the Great Dale and Thesk. Each region has its own slightly different view on them.

As an addendum - since there is not direct listed links to Thay - what do people think about a tiefling hailing from the area? I somewhat assume that it is pretty plausible, but just curious as to what others may think.
And I see no reason why there wouldn't be any tieflings in Thay....
It is indeed plausible. Races of Faerūn notes that most of the tieflings found in Faerūn are derived from bloodlines that have originated in both Mulhorand and Thay.

Additionally, see the "Races and Cultures" section of the chapter on Thay in the Unapproachable East tome as well, for more on tieflings active in the land of the Red Wizards.

Aye,

the fey'ri tieflings of 2e would be just fey'ri now.

And I see no reason why there wouldn't be any tieflings in Thay....

Thanks also for the novel reference. I may have to think about re-reading that.

One of the main characters in the FR novel The Glass Prison (by Monte Cook, 1999) is a tiefling. Named Vheod.
