Could anyone tell me about known wildmages in the realms ? Especially in the silvermarches and surrounding areas. I guess some of the Harpell family might be wildmages but I was wondering about others.

Thanks for the pointer, Wooly.

There may still be cows falling out of the sky, you just can't blame them on wildmages anymore . . .

Not only that, but you had to cast high level spells to have the most serious level variation -- which was plus or minus five levels (so an 18th level wizard, on an incredibly unlucky day, would still be tossing 9th level spells, but the variables like range and damage would be those for a 13th level mage).

You can check the original level variation table and wild surge effects; they're on the Wizards downloads page under the "Classic Errata" section.

OK, thanks for pointing that out, Wooly.

Yeah, but he misstates what would happen, at least with a 2E wild mage. His example of an 18th level wizard being unable to pull off a cantrip simply couldn't happen. The casting level might fluctuate, with effects based on that, but at no point did that mean a caster couldn't cast spells that would otherwise beyond their abilities, or be unable to cast spells they could normally cast. The spells just might not function as well as normal -- or they might be more effective.

I don't see how having the caster level be variable is unbalancing... And that feature, plus wild surges, were what the class was all about.

Thanks for the info...no wild surges? I thought that the randomness was the whole appeal of the class! :-/ I DO see what SKR was getting at, though, when he felt the class needed to be serious and consistent (up to a point).

I definately agree with Wooly especially when you modified the wildsurge charts. The prestige class took away almost everything that was so great about the wild mages..... And so infuriating. I'm using the old style wildmage still when I need them.

Well, I believe there's a wild mage prestige class now... Yeah in Complete Arcane

I wasn't really happy with that spin on them, myself, since the wild surges were gone. I played a wild mage in 2E, and the wild surges made it a lot of fun. IMO, taking those away took away a large part of the feel of the wild mage.

Sean K Reynolds did a 3E version, too, but I still wasn't entirely satisfied with it. His version is here:

I seem to recall that my DM statted the mysterious Sabbar of Waterdeep as a wild mage (tutoring one of our PCs for years). It may not be canon, though?

That's definately interesting. Not quite what I was looking for though but they might definately have their uses.
