I've looked and looked, and either I'm blind or they don't exist.
Are there any orders of knighthood in the Realms that AREN'T extensions of a church? |

Well, the must-have series of sourcebooks: Faiths & Avatars, Demihuman Deities, and Power & Pantheons does not only include all faiths of Faerūn (bar the monstrous ones), but also a section in each about affiliated orders. So you will most likely get a fair amount of knightly, crusader, and paladin orders there. The more mundane ones, i.e. those who are knightly by name (e.g., Knights of Myth Drannor), or who have been created after the ascencion of 3E are not included, for obvious reasons. |

The 2nd Edition sourcebook "The City of Ravens Bluff" lists a number of Knightly Orders based in Ravens Bluff. The sourcebook is available, as a freebie PDF download at Wizards' site: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads (added before Wooly does  ).
From what I can see, most non-religious knightky orders are local affairs, which are devoted to a realm or a city. There seems to be no Faerūn-wide military order that exists in parallel (or above) sovereign nations or cities, like the Knights Templar or the Order of St. John.

Do the Riders of Nesme count as a Knighthood?
I don't think they are associated with any religion. |

I suspect that whereas our word 'knight' derives from a role within a formal European social structure, the Realms term or terms translated as 'knight' are more about personal knightliness and don't necessitate official status. |

Check out the organizations on Champions of Valor and the Tethyr section of Lands of Intrigue. I believe both include secular orders. The Knights of Silver in Silverymoon might qualify, depending on what you mean by "knight". |

what about "nobility" knights, knights that do not belong eithor to an order nor are self appointed but instead are individual champions for the upper class?  does that make sense? |

I hadn't even thought of the Purple Dragon knights, although to be honest I've always pictured them more as glorified guards.
Yes, I was thinking more along the lines of the old Cavalier PC class, and whether there were orders that fit that type, as opposed to only paladins. |

The Term Knight is abit missed used in th Realms (in that Knights dont necessarily fit our real world stero types)
From publish Realmslore we can probably break it "Knights" down into 3 types

It would help to know how "knightly order" is being defined here, I suppose. Evro may be thinking of the more courtly style of knight, that is one who is chivalorous, fights for his ruler, and so on... |

The Knights of the Unicorn aren't really an extension of the church of Lurue... Of course, they're not a traditional knightly order, either.
The traditional idea of a knight includes some sort of religious tradition. With gods being as prominent as they are in the Realms, it's only natural that they'll have the market cornered on knightly orders. |

Hmmm, do the Purple Dragons of Cormyr count? They are rather knightly in spirit, anyway. |
