In Promise of the Witch-King Jarlaxle uses a wand to create a meal, several meals for himself, Entereri and the halfling army. Hero's Feat describes a table and chairs and that certainly didn't pop up. So I'm thinking the wand he had was a basic Create Food and Water spells.. but I seem to remember the food being more tastey and that spell if I'm not incorrect is more bland in both food and drink. Am I over looking other possible spells?

Yes and as stated the magic system of 2E was different. The multiclassing system of 2E was ALSO different.
Character don't fit nicely? Sithspit! Look at Elminster, Drizzt? They've both got their splashs from their short alternative lives. Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, Barbarian.
Jarlaxle uses all kinds of magic items, a straighter fighter he is not. His fighting system doesn't even lend well to it and there have been rapier wielding prestige classes before there were FR regional supplements.
It's more lazy stating, nothing else.

I think you guys are looking at this backwards, the only way to possibly describe Jarlaxe and the way he fights etc... was as a fighter in 2ed. Check out servant of the Shard, he is described as using a swashbuckling style, hence WoTC inventing the Swashbuckler class tailor made for Jarlaxe! |

I was looking for other possibilities, not that fountain of usefulness. Bob isn't the only author that overdoes the novelization of D&D mechanics anyway.

RAS more or less still uses 1st/2nd edition rules, in which wands could be used by anyone that knew the command words.
RAS has seen no reason for the most part to make any changes to his stories just because the rules of the world that the stories are taking place in have changed. |
