I need one of these for my game. Before I just go and slap some Vile damage onto a normal Fire Elemental, I thought I'd ask if there were any precedents. I don't particularly like the way Hellfire is handled in the BoVD or the Fiendish Codexes. Are there any other sources I may be unaware of? Ravenloft, perhaps? If said HfE were powering a forge, do you think adding the Unholy special weapon property to any weapons forged in said forge would be appropriate? Any thoughts? |

The Sandpoint devil has hellfire breath (PF 1), Chortov in What Lies in Dust (PF 27?ish). And the immolation devil in Bestiary 2. No elementals that I know of, only one possessed by a balor. |

I've also forgotten about the "archomentals", I think they are the former "princes of elemental good/evil", reappearing in 2e. Take a look at the Planescape MC 3 (I think). |

Aren't demons corrupted elementals in 4e?

I have found reference to Fiendish (Earth and Water) Elementals in the Pathfinder setting. Does anybody know if there are any examples to be found in any of their adventures or elsewhere?
I found the Infernal Fire Elemental. This seems an appropriately named site. |

Yes, I have it. However, as far as I remember, the elementals in Hell are only lawful evil elementals, equal to other elementals in all respects. And I'm not sure, but I think there are only evil water elementals there.  |

I don't know if it is technically "allowed" by the rules, but I'm doing it. There is inspiration in the corrupted fire spirits (Balrogs) in Middle Earth. I found the Hellstar on the D&D Wiki. Do you happen to have Paladin in Hell? I'm going to scrummage through my tomes tonight and see what I can find, if not I'll just make it up. |

I've asked about it because in 2e, fiends were creatures from the Outer Planes (linked to the Prime Material through the Astral Plane), and elementals came from the Inner Planes (linked to the Ethereal). So, theoretically there would be no elemental fiends. Paladin in Hell was quite "flexible" or "alternative" regarding those concepts, and had its lot of "exceptions". That's why I asked if such "template combination" was possible in 3.5e. |

Fellfire, I think there is some info about infernal elementals in the 2e adventure "Paladin in Hell". As far as I remember, however, they are only evil elementals. Is it possible, in 3.5e, to exist a "fiendish elemental"? |

If it's a one-shot creature then you won't break your game by using something strange. A fiend with (hellfire) elementalist classes? A sentient fire elemental with (infernal) warlock classes? A (fire) genasi-tiefling crossbreed? A retrograded 4E Abyssal (fire) genasi?
For the hellfire forge I'd personally disallow unrestricted use of permanent magics (like unholy), any of these:
Impose a limit to how often such items can be forged (only during dark moon, once per live sacrifice fed into the flames, etc)
Impose a limit on use or duration (magical property only effective within 6 mile radius, only works for 666 days, etc)
Impose a maintenance cost on forged items (wielder must burn 6 points of his blood in the forge every day, or must anneal and temper the blade in the forge then quench it in 666 points of LG paladin/victim blood every year, etc)
There is of course Krynn's dragonforge (used to make dragonlances). 2E ToM has the (Dwarven) forge of metal protection. Spelljammer has various furnace (and artifurnace) helms which essentially melt magic items. Molten lava, burning star fragments, dragonflame, fire elementals, or remorhaz digestion might be used to generate extraordinary heat, as could burning all sorts of fantastic woods, oils, alchemical mixtures, etc. Not much else about forges that I know of in D&D lore, though much is said about the properties of various metals/alloys. |

I did find reference to a Ravenloft Pyre (Grave, Blood and Mist) Elemental, but I swear there is something I'm forgetting. |

I'm not aware of any RAVENLOFT examples, but I can certainly look through some of the older books for the setting... just in case I've missed something. |
