Heh-heh-heh. I'll have to contact Ed to see if I can say more (there was an NDA on this, years ago in the TSR days, but I've never officially heard if it was lifted).
In the meantime, guess away, scribes ...
love,
THO
P.S. No, it does NOT mean he married a "Muth." He was trying to distance himself from his origins, not just step sideways but still confirm for everyone what he truly was. It means he adopted quite a different family name, of a friend he admired, from another city. If I remember rightly (this was a long time ago, and said brother wasn't alive, onstage, in our Realmsplay).
love to all,
THO

Also, if Manshoon's family name was Shoon, and the naming convention was popular in the southern coastal lands (ie, The Lands of Intrigue), then is it possible that Manshoon is a decendent of former rulers of Calimshan?

Exactly what I was wondering!

Hi. An answer to that, from Ed himself:

Because Manshoon's brother was estranged from his family, and didn't want others to assume he was in any way like them.

So saith Ed.

Thanks.

One more thing - according to Villain´s Lorebook (and IMHO some other canonical FR sources) the brother of Manshoon was Asmuth (not Asmuthshoon, or something).

How come?

Best Regards,

Mandras.

From Ed himself a long while ago, that I dredged up from the depths of my HD:

Manshoon’s family name is “Shoon,” and all members of his family use a single name, derived by adding a prefix to “Shoon” (usually an established family one, such as Brar/Brarrara; Caul/Caulra; Dusk/Duskra; Farl/Farla; Gul/Gularra; Harl/Harla; Kul/Kuldra; Man/Mana; Pel/Pelra; Sarr/Sarrla; Tarl/Tarla; Vorl/Vorlarra [the male form first, female form second]). So, no first name and surname, just a single name. This is a naming convention once very popular in southerly coastal lands (of the coast known, in its more northerly reaches, as the Sword Coast), but now dying out because most of the peoples who used it were conquered or made slaves, and gradually died out or intermarried and in any case adopted the naming conventions of those “over” them (so as to “belong” and escape inferior status).

To quote the inimitable THO: So saith Ed.

-- George Krashos

P.S. The other Manshoon tidbits that followed will be saved for a realmslore rainy day.
